University of Sydney

The University of Sydney abuts the suburb of Darlington. Over the years the University has been buying up the area and consolidating their land holdings. As an example the current Darlington Primary School was built to replace the old Darlington school which was taken over by the University. With proposals in late 2007 to consolidate the University's Abercrombie Street precinct the school will again be surrounded on two sides by the University campus.
The University of Sydney Reconciliation Statement
The following Statement was launched on 1 June 2006 by Professor Gavin Brown at Sydney University following Welcome to Country by Gadigal Elder Mr Charles Madden. Mr Phil Glendenning, Director of the Edm8und Rice Centre and President of ANTAR provided an address on reconciliation followed by a performance by children from Erskinville Aboriginal Dance group lead by Terry Olsen.

REDWatch Letter Regarding Sydney University & North Eveleigh
The letter below was sent on 24 May 2010 by REDWatch individually to local politicians urging "the state government and Sydney University enter into negotiations to overcome whatever non-financial obstacles exist to the sale of the North Eveleigh site to the University." Resident Questions if Sydney Uni has followed Planning Requirements
A Darlington Resident, who is part of a group of Darlington residents concerned about Sydney Uni’s proposed developments, has written to the Department of Planning arguing that Sydney Uni has not complied with the Department’s consultation requirements for the proposed Abercrombie Street redevelopment. The text of the email below asks the Department to request the University to address the lack of community consultation before allowing the proposal to be formally exhibited. Sydney Uni Abercrombie Street Campus Plans
Sydney University has made available its plans for the new Abercrombie Street Business School on their web site while waiting for the Department of Planning to place the documents on formal exhibitions. Darlington locals are encouraged to become familiar with the proposals as there is expected to be only 4 weeks of formal exhibition. The Exhibition is expected to start soon. Sartor: Keneally discussed plan for North Eveleigh with Sydney Uni
"Keneally devised a plan to 'compensate' Sydney University for its `loss' of the Callan Park opportunity as Planning minister, by offer­ing it the North Eveleigh site in Redfern, which had been prepared for tender." according to Frank Sartor in his 2011 book "The Fog on the Hill - How NSW Labor Lost its Way". According to Frank Sartor in his 2011 book "The Fog on the Hill - How NSW Labor Lost its Way"(pp118-123) Kristina Keneally, as Planning Minister, devised a plan to 'compensate' Sydney University for its `loss' of the Callan Park opportunity by offer­ing it the North Eveleigh site in Redfern, which had been prepared for tender. Sartor makes further claims that he was told that Sydney University were only prepared to pay $30m for the site while the site was worth $100m. Sydney University was asked to comment on Sartor's comments for a South Sydney Herald article in 2012 and below is the full text of their media statement of 31 January 2012.
USyd Abercrombie Precinct Development - December 2011 stakeholder briefings Report
In late November and early December 2011 Sydney University held briefings with more than 10 various organisations and stakeholder groups ov er their reworked thinking about the University’s Abercrombie Precinct development. A summary of the key points raised at the briefings and community workshop are provided below. These points have also been forwarded to the project design team, to be considered in the revised project design. The University expects to have a revised concept plan completed by the end of January and will arrange a follow up briefing in early February to present this new plan and get feedback, before it finalised and lodged with the Department of Planning and Infrastructure. To assit in understanding some of the comments we have included a photo taken of one of the sketches used at the consultation.

Sydney Uni will be at the Eveleigh Markets on Saturday 11 February between 8am and 1pm for drop in sessions with locals. The University Of Sydney Design Team are close to finalising the revised plans for their Abercrombie Street Business School. This is a great opportunity for you to view the plans and speak with representatives of the project team. If you can't make it to the markets, project information and a model will be on display in the foyer of the University’s Services Building, 22 Codrington Street, from Monday 20 February until Tuesday 20 March. The foyer is accessible between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday.

Sydny Uni's Abercrombie Street Modifications in Response to Exhibition - Until 1 June
Sydney Uni has responded to the 2011 Exhibition with a changed proposal which is now on exhibition. The Project Application is to develop a new educational precinct within the site bounded by Abercrombie Street, Codrington Street, Darlington Street and Golden Grove Street. Currently the Department website provides no details of when the proposal goes off exhibition.
REDWatch Submission on USyd Abercrombie Precinct Redevelopment Application No: MP07_0158
In the submission below on the University of Sydney Abercrombie Precinct Redevelopment, REDWatch raised issues highlighted the deficiencies in the ARUP and Parson Brickerhoff Traffic Studies. In light of these deficiencies we ask the Department to also apply the SKM review findings to this application. We also request the Department to require a TMAP with similar conditions to those applied to North Eveleigh for the Abercrombie Street Development.

The Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) handed down its determination on the University of Sydney's Abercrombie Street Business School on 16 November 2012. The PAC made a number of changes to the Departments proposed conditions. The PAC has determined that the entrance to the Development is not to be from Abercrombie Street and that the University is to prepare a Darlington Precinct Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Strategy by 30 June 2013 which is to identify works to the value of $2m to be completed prior to the occupation of the Business School.
