City Moves to new Village Hubs & Seeks Community Input

The City of Sydney Council has divided the City into 10 village Groups in line with the proposals first outlined in 2008 in the Council's 2030 Strategy. The new Redfern Street "village group" includes the suburbs of Chippendale, Darlington and Eveleigh as well as Redfern west of Chalmers Street / Redfern Oval, Waterloo north of McEvoy and west of young Street as well as Alexandria north of Buckland and Copeland Streets.

As part of the change Council is looking for input from local communities about their community. This information will be used to develop plans for the Village Groups. The last time Council sort such information they used it to develop the Local Action Plans which set the Council agenda for work in local communities. It is hence very important that residents take this opportunity to tell Council about their local community and what they would like to see Council do in their community.

Council officers currently are compiling a cross-disiplinary list of initiatives completed,
underway or budgeted in each area as an initial frame for what is going on
locally. Brochures that include these lists should be on the website mid-January.

The village plans themselves will
come together over the coming four or five months with input/suggestions/vision
from groups like REDWatch and others in the community about projects where communities would like support or facilitation, or ideas that form part of a longer term
vision for the community, things that may have been missed etc.

The timing
at this stage is that we will be compiling all the suggestions /proposals
over January and February, community forums will be run in each area in March,
and draft plans will go to Council around May (and be exhibited for
community comment) .

You can find out about the new "Village Groups" and how to make a submission at www.2030inyourvillage.com.au. You can also make a submission by filling in this form.

One of the first studies done on the new boundaries was the Redfern Street Village Centre study (PDF 445Kb)

Council has circulated the flyer below to encourage community involvement. Please note that the wording used below was incorrect and there are as yet no finalised 'preliminary
plans' these as explained above are expected in mid January.

2030 in Your Village

The City of Sydney includes diverse villages and neighbourhoods, each known for their distinctive characteristics.

These villages and neighbourhoods are at the heart of our Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan. When developing the plan, we envisioned them as places where you can walk or ride a bike for most of the shops and services you need, take time out in a leafy park or enjoy a community event.

We invite you to be involved in planning the next stage of the future of your neighbourhood and village.

Our villages are as equally important for the culture and economy of our city as the CBD.

In 2005/2006, we developed Local Action Plans (LAP) in consultation with you to honour our City of Villages commitment. Most LAP projects are underway or complete, including new facilities, parks and street improvements.

We again consulted in 2007 to develop Sustainable Sydney 2030 – our long term vision to make Sydney environmentally, economically, socially
and culturally sustainable.

Many new residents and businesses have made Sydney their home since 2007. As the City develops new community-based projects we again invite
you to work with us.

We have prepared preliminary plans for discussion and comment.

They reflect our work so far and capture what we already know about your neighbourhood.

You can see them at www.2030inyourvillage.com.au and follow the prompts to have your say or send your feedback to City of Sydney Village Planning Team, Town Hall House, 456 Kent Street, Sydney NSW 2000.

Following your comment and feedback, we will prepare draft plans to discuss with you at a workshop in early 2012. After the workshops, we will
develop proposals for Council’s consideration and funding in future budgets.

Clover Moore MP Lord Mayor

Many of the 10 village groups the City of Sydney has identified share a major main street. Village groups will help Council manage how they work to
provide services and fairly allocate funding. The Ten village Groups are:

CBD & Harbour

Chinatown & CBD South

Crown & Baptist Streets

Glebe Point Road

Green Square & City South

Harris Street

King Street

Macleay Street & Woolloomooloo

Oxford Street

Redfern Street

Community to Have Say on Aboriginal Affairs Policy - Redfern 24 Jan 2012

On December 14 2011 Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Victor Dominello MP opened community consultation for the development of a new Aboriginal affairs strategy for NSW. To help the public get involved in developing the strategy, Community Discussion Papers on service delivery, education and employment have been released, as has a schedule of public community meetings across NSW reports this Ministerial media release.

“The
Ministerial Taskforce on Aboriginal Affairs – including seven Ministers and
senior Aboriginal representatives – is determined to involve Aboriginal
communities and other stakeholders in fostering great futures for Aboriginal
people through improved educational and employment opportunity, and better
performance by Government,” Minister Dominello said.

“Our
Taskforce wants
to hear directly from the Aboriginal community, Aboriginal parents, the
non-government sector, corporate Australia, educators and other ‘opportunity
creators’ about what’s working on the ground and how we can build on these
initiatives for the benefit of Aboriginal kids.

“Our
Taskforce seeks ideas that create generational change and will see more Aboriginal
kids having real opportunity, real choices and real careers.
That means more Aboriginal
doctors, more Aboriginal accountants, more Aboriginal engineers, more
Aboriginal teachers – and any other successful future that a young Aboriginal
person may choose.

“With
more than 35 per cent of the NSW Aboriginal population estimated to be under
the age of 15, the NSW Government is determined to help today’s Aboriginal kids
have great tomorrows through choice, responsibility and opportunity.[i]

“Responding
to the Community Discussion Papers and participating in the planned
public meetings throughout NSW gives people the chance to say how together –
Government and community – we can lead and succeed in having Aboriginal
aspiration overcome Aboriginal disadvantage,” Minister Dominello said.

Minister
Dominello noted that the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government has learned
from the failure of the former Government and is committed to a genuine
partnership-based approach to Aboriginal affairs.

“The
best results are gained when Aboriginal communities identify the opportunities,
take responsibility, develop capabilities and drive the solutions. That’s why
it’s critical for there to be strong, honest and genuine
partnerships with Aboriginal communities – both at the Taskforce level and in
developing the strategy through consultation,” Minister Dominello said.

“Governments
do not and cannot have all the answers and I encourage all interested
organisations and individuals to get involved in the public consultation
process through attending a meeting or making an online submission.

“Your
views will certainly be welcome, respected and responded to,” Minister
Dominello said.

This session will include an update on our plans and give you an opportunity to provide your feedback, to help ensure we get this precinct right for the
future.

Should you have any questions please contact the project team on 9114 0523 or email abercrombie.precinct@sydney.edu.au.

We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.

If you can't make it to the markets, project information and a model will be on display in the foyer of the University’s Services Building, 22 Codrington Street, from Monday 20 February until Tuesday 20 March. The foyer is accessible between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday.

The new plans for the proposed Business School will be submitted to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure toward the end of February. The submission process includes a formal public exhibition period.

The University is committed to producing the best possible outcome for future users of the space, including our neighbours.

Amendment of Redfern Waterloo Authority Sites State Significant Site Listing - Until 15 Feb 2012

The Sydney Metropolitan Development Corporation has changes to planning controls to a site which contains a heritage building known as the Large Erecting Shop (LES), and surrounding buildings and land (the site). The site, which is owned by Railcorp, was originally intended to be redeveloped. Railcorp has since determined that the site is to remain as an operational asset of Railcorp, and the LES be retained for rail heritage purposes. Accordingly, the SMDA has requested an amendment to rezone the site to Special Purposes Zone – Infrastructure, and amend the development controls to reflect this decision. In addition, to ensure that existing and potential future operations of private rail heritage operators can occur on the site it is proposed to permit rail infrastructure facilities and information and education facilities to be carried out with consent by
any person as an additional permitted use. In short the proposed changes remove 12 storey zoning above the LES and restores it to its existing height.
