Council to Consult SMDA on Planning Activities in Redfern-Waterloo Growth Centre
Below is the text of a letter from The Director General of the Department of Planning to the Lord Mayor of Sydney requesting council to "Council defer finalisation of the DCP amendment for the Lachlan Street Precinct until the SMDA have been consulted with, and their views have been considered. More broadly I encourage you to consult with the SMDA on other planning activities and amendments that you propose within their identified growth centre for Redfern-Waterloo".

Glimmer of Hope for TJ Hickey Justice

RWA Places BEP 2 on Exhibition Only Until 28th February
The RWA placed its Draft Plan for Built Environment Phase 2 (BEP2) on public exhibition on 27th January 2011. The Draft BEP2 proposes new planning controls for public housing estates in Redfern Waterloo and Eveleigh and is on exhibition until 28th February 2011. The short exhibition is not a statutory exhibition. The RWA is looking for comment before finalising the planning controls for the area which will then be placed on formal exhibition. The area covered by the RWA BEP2 have been removed from the City of Sydney Local Environment Plan which is to go on exhibition in February. Below REDWatch has provided the details of the exhibition as they appeared on the RWA website on 27 January 2011 - This was adjusted when the RWA website closed to point to the SMDA and then UGDC websites.
New Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras workshops open in Redfern St
The buzz is building for the Mardi Gras Parade 2011, with new workshops powered by Google, opening in Redfern St Redfern. Volunteers are sought to help build the community floats which will light up Oxford St on March 5 reports Kim Shaw in Central on 12 January 1011.

New SEPP covers Redfern Waterloo Eveleigh and Darlington
The NSW Government announced a new SEPP (State Planning Policy) on 16 December covering all of Redfern Waterloo Darlington & Eveleigh. The SEPP requires the RWA successor the Sydney Sydney Metropolitan Development (SMDA) to undertake a planning study of the area. The study will look at a wide range of issues such as infrastructure capacity, traffic and flood modeling, urban design outcomes, landscaping, environmental issues and economic and social factors. The SEPP limits the consent activities of the City of Sydney - The full media release is below. On 17 December the Government published Orders bringing the SMDA under the Growth Centres (Development Corporations) 1974 Act and transferring no Aboriginal Employment RWA staff to the SMDA (links also below).

Redfern & Waterloo public housing – many plans & questions
In August 2010, REDWatch produced the discussion paper, Planning for the Redevelopment of Redfern & Waterloo Public Housing. REDWatch has also been adding background material about relevant issues to its website under the Public Housing tab. All this is in preparation for the expected consultations about the future shape of the Redfern & Waterloo public housing estates. REDWatch’s spokesperson, Geoff Turnbull, explores some of the issues for the South Sydney Herald in their December 2010 issue.
New Chance for Young People at Risk - 90 Regent St

Pemulwuy Project Modification Details Publicly Available
The Department of Planning (DoP) has posted the Aboriginal Housing Company’s (AHC) Preliminary Plans for modification of the Pemulwuy Project Concept Plan. These documents can now be viewed on the Department of Planning’s Major Project website under Pemulwuy Concept Plan MOD 1.
