New Heritahe DCP Strengthens Protection

CLOVER'S eNEWS - Friday 26 January 2007 - No. 331 reports that support of our heritage has increased with a new City-wide Heritage Development Control Plan (DCP) now in force to strengthen protection for distinctive features such as rows of terraces, laneways, chimneys and decorative balconies.

The DCP forms part of the comprehensive framework to preserve the heritage character of City neighbourhoods and guide future development, including protection for identified heritage items, streetscapes and conservation areas in our Local Environment Plan (LEP). We continue to refine heritage controls through ongoing research and consultation during completion of a new City Plan.

Following public exhibition of the draft Heritage DCP last year, the plan was revised with:

  • amendments to the introduction to clarify the requirements for development applications;
  • significant readability improvements and more photographs and diagrams;
  • new chapter introductions to help clarify the purpose of different sections; and
  • minor amendments to correct spelling, formatting or grammatical errors.

In contrast, industrial heritage is now threatened through the State Government action on the Carlton and United Brewery site and the state owned Eveleigh Railway workshops; with the Federal Government's Productivity Commission's report recommending the introduction of voluntary heritage listings and limited heritage impact assessments before development.
