CUB TO BECOME A STATE SIGNIFICANT SITE

Planning Minister Frank Sartor today (21 June 2006) announced he would intervene in the $800 million redevelopment of the Carlton United Brewery site near Central Station, states a media release from his office.

“This is a landmark redevelopment across four city blocks near the biggest railway station in NSW,” Mr Sartor said.

“But the project has been tangled up in red tape at Town Hall for three years.

“I fear it’s heading for an inferior design outcome – and this important site deserves better.

“More than a dozen different design schemes have been submitted to Council, at a cost of $8 million in design fees.

“But this lengthy process has failed to deliver certainty – that’s why I have decided to commence the process of determining this project under the Part 3A system introduced last year.

“This will streamline planning, provide ample opportunity for public consultation, and deliver more certainty for local residents and investors.

“It will also ensure this urban renewal project yields an affordable housing contribution for Redfern and Waterloo, as foreshadowed in Parliament two years ago.”

Mr Sartor said the contribution would be no more than 3 per cent of the development value.

“I have appointed an expert advisory panel to work with residents and the developer to optimise design.”

The panel will be chaired by Chris Johnson from the Department of Planning, and includes:

  • Michael Collins, Chair of the Heritage Council NSW;
  • Neil Bird, Deputy Chairman of Landcom;
  • Lucy Turnbull, former Sydney Lord Mayor.

Mr Sartor said the concept plan would provide the same level of community benefits as those flagged by the City of Sydney, or better.

“Designating the CUB site as State Significant and preparing a concept plan will cut six to 12 months off the development process, which has already dragged on far too long.”
