Council Committee approves New Department of Housing Dwellings for Redfern
The Committee recommended approval of two development applications which will provide modified units for the elderly and disabled, and townhouses for families, on the block bounded by Walker, Morehead, Phillip and Kettle Streets.
The architect designed schemes includes 66 units in four buildings on the corners of the site and 40 townhouses along Walker and Morehead Streets. Councillors congratulated the Department on its environmentally sustainable design, including water collection for re-use and energy efficiency.
To fund the construction, the Department will sell adjacent land, bound by Elizabeth, Phillip, Walker and Kettle Streets for private residential development. The ageing three storey blocks on both sites are becoming derelict and the Department says it can no longer maintain them.
The Department's Deputy Director General has assured me that residents living on the redevelopment site will be supported to move to a Department of Housing property in their area of choice during construction, with moving costs covered by the Department, and that they will have the opportunity to return to the new development when is complete.
I have also asked the Department to ensure that residents have the social and physical support they need to move, including help packing and unpacking for physically disabled or elderly tenants.
