Independents Step Up - New faces vie for spot on council

LORD Mayor Clover Moore has announced her team of Independent candidates to contest the Sydney Council election in September reports Jennifer Bennett in the central of 9th July 2008.

While Cr Robyn Kemmis will not run, councillors Marcelle Hoff, John McInerney and Philip Black are staying on, joined by five new candidates.

The new faces include Di Tornai, who is vice-chair of the Victoria Park Community Group; Robert Kok, a lawyer and Chinese community representative; Andrew Duckmanton, the president of the Darlinghurst Business Partnership; John Wardle, a musician and alcohol licence reform activist; and Dr Lesley Lynch, a political and civil liberties activist.

Cr Moore said the new team was as diverse as the city it represented and would be able to take on the problems of the city.

"I believe our team does combine energy with expertise," she said. Cr Moore said the local government elections would also deliver a warning to the State Government about the feelings of voters.

"I do believe this election will be an opportunity for the people of NSW to give feedback to the State Government," she said.

Cr Moore also thanked Cr Kemmis for her contribution to the city.

Cr Kemmis said she was "very proud" of what the council had achieved in the past four years. Cr Black said he was looking forward to continuing to work on the council's Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan, as well as heritage and open space issues.

"There are too many things to finish," Cr Black said.
