Rees comes to Eveleigh for kids

The Premier and Arts Minister, Nathan Rees, today launched the inaugural Sydney Children’s Festival at the CarriageWorks at Eveleigh reports Central on 16th September 2008.

The Premier joined a crowd of hundreds of children from St Mary’s primary school, Erskineville, who previewed highlights from the Festival.

The Sydney Children’s Festival will take place at CarriageWorks in the coming school holidays between September 27 and October 11.

The Premier said for the first time Sydney would have a festival of contemporary arts and performance dedicated entirely to children.

“The Sydney Children’s Festival will create an artistic playground for children and their families during the coming school holidays,” Mr Rees said.

“Interactive workshops, performances, installations, roving performances and art exhibitions will transform every corner of CarriageWorks into a creative experience for children aged from 5 to 15 and their families.

“The focus at the Sydney Children’s Festival is on encouraging community participation, and inspiring creativity and imagination in children, and in the child in all of us.

“It’s hoped that the Festival will become an annual event and spread right across the city and Western Sydney.”

The Festival will open on Saturday, September 27, with Critical Mass, a twilight concert showcasing a massed orchestra of 100 young flautists in the CarriageWorks foyer.

The Festival will feature a strong indigenous presence, including storytelling by indigenous elders and indigenous dance and music workshops.
