Demand for Drug Support

A $1.3 million refurbishment of the South Sydney Youth Service centre was given the green light by Sydney Council last week reports Robert Burton Bradley in the Central of 3 December 2008.

The refurbishment will allow the centre to meet increasing demand for its counselling and health services.

It is the only centre in Australia to provide youth amphetamine counselling services.

Centre director Shane Brown said the refurbishment would allow the centre to expand its services.

“SSYS has grown dramatically in the last three years and we need the space for counselling, youth services and community meeting spaces,” he said.

Mr Brown said the centre was particularly proud of its work with young amphetamine users.

“There very little research that’s been done on amphetamine use in young people and there’s not a lot known about detox and rehabilitation,” Mr Brown said. “We do know you need long term support for people using or who have used amphetamines in the past.

“The idea is to provide holistic support for those young people.”

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore applauded the service’s value to the community.
