New Alcohol-Free Zones Proposed for Sydney

The City of Sydney is to consider 73 proposals for Alcohol Free Zones (AFZ) from police and local residents across Sydney reports Annette Shailer in The Shout on 27th March 2009.

Sydney lord mayor, Clover Moore MP, said extensive community consultation will begin with community groups and organisations about the proposed AFZs.

“Since 2006, police have requested some 50 AFZs in Leichhardt, Newtown, City Central, Redfern and Metropolitan Sydney Local Area Commands, but most of those AFZs will expire in early July,” Moore said.

“The City of Sydney is now being asked to consider a total of 73 proposals from police and local residents to make public roads, footpaths and public car parks across the city alcohol-free.”

AFZs make it an offence to drink alcohol in a specified zone and give police the power to confiscate alcohol found in these areas.

Of the 73 proposed AFZs, 50 are existing AFZs and 23 are newly proposed AFZs.

The newly proposed AFZs include eight in the City Central Command, five in Leichhardt, three in Newtown, five in Redfern and two in the Rocks.

The proposed AFZs will be placed on public exhibition and go through a community consultation process over a 40 day period.

The AFZ consultation will be discussed at a City of Sydney committee meeting on Monday (Mar 30).
