South Sydney Youth Service offers free hip hop

Young people keen on hip-hop but unable to afford lessons should apply to South Sydney Youth Services where a new dance program is giving kids the chance to dance.

Youth worker Heather Coull said there was room for 15 young people to join weekly classes at the Urban Dance Centre, working with famed hip-hop teacher Sisqo.

“Our aim is to give young people a pathway into a career in dance,’’ Ms Coull said.

“At end of the year Urban Dance Centre will be selecting one of the young people to join the youth program free of charge. It could also be an opportunity for someone to gain a scholarship into Certificate IV in Performing Arts at Urban Dance Centre.’’

Ms Coull said young people aged 12 to 14 years were encouraged to apply, but the age limit was flexible.
“Everyone who applies will be interviewed for positions,’’ she said.

“It’s an opportunity for someone really talented to get into the industry where they might not otherwise have been able to.

“They can gain experience and be with the same group over the year.

“I’m hoping to get them to perform at various different events over the year so they gain the skills and experience.’’
Applications must be in by April 17 and classes begin May 13.
