Frasers has lodged a modified concept with the Department of Planning for the former Broadway brewery site. The modified concept plan will soon be on exhibition, and with the technical documents, available to the public (Frasers will publish the documents relating to the modified concept plan on their website at the first opportunity). Frasers say they are keen to give high quality information to the community in order to inform any public submissions.

At 6:30pm there will be presentations to highlight the proposed modifications to the Concept Plan as well as the design excellence process. The international and Australian design team will be available to showcase their preliminary designs for the site.

Fraser’s realise that this community information session is being held during the school holidays which is not ideal but say they are unfortunately subject to the Department of Planning approval process.

Fraser’s intend to have an additional static display (in addition to the required display at the DoP) that will run during the exhibition process. Details of the location and timing will be made available as soon as the DoP provides its advice.

The Concept Plan for the site which is on public exhibition now will allow the developer to build a large scale commercial and residential development on both sides of Carriageworks extending from Redfern Station to Forbes St along the southern side of Wilson St.

The plan         

• brings thousands of workers and new residents into the area
• allows buildings of up to 16 storeys
• will have a major impact on the amount of traffic in the area
• contains no sustainability requirements for the developer  

Come along and talk to others about your concerns and what should go into your and others submissions. The RWA have agreed to open YaamaDhiyaan ( 255 Wilson Street Darlington) so anyone who has not seen the model for the plans can see it on the day. In the case of rain we will meet atYaama Dhiyaan without the BBQ.

The community only has until 12^th June 2008 to make submissions to the Department of Planning.

All submissions on the Concept Plan must be made in writing to The Department of Planning.

“The Ministerial Taskforce on Aboriginal Affairs – including seven Ministers and senior Aboriginal representatives – is determined to involve Aboriginal communities and other stakeholders in fostering great futures for Aboriginal people through improved educational and employment opportunity, and better performance by Government,” Minister Dominello said.

“Our Taskforce wants to hear directly from the Aboriginal community, Aboriginal parents, the non-government sector, corporate Australia, educators and other ‘opportunity creators’ about what’s working on the ground and how we can build on these initiatives for the benefit of Aboriginal kids.

“Our Taskforce seeks ideas that create generational change and will see more Aboriginal kids having real opportunity, real choices and real careers. That means more Aboriginal doctors, more Aboriginal accountants, more Aboriginal engineers, more Aboriginal teachers – and any other successful future that a young Aboriginal person may choose.

“With more than 35 per cent of the NSW Aboriginal population estimated to be under the age of 15, the NSW Government is determined to help today’s Aboriginal kids have great tomorrows through choice, responsibility and opportunity.[i]

“Responding to the Community Discussion Papers and participating in the planned public meetings throughout NSW gives people the chance to say how together – Government and community – we can lead and succeed in having Aboriginal aspiration overcome Aboriginal disadvantage,” Minister Dominello said.

Minister Dominello noted that the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government has learned from the failure of the former Government and is committed to a genuine partnership-based approach to Aboriginal affairs.

“The best results are gained when Aboriginal communities identify the opportunities, take responsibility, develop capabilities and drive the solutions. That’s why it’s critical for there to be strong, honest and genuine partnerships with Aboriginal communities – both at the Taskforce level and in developing the strategy through consultation,” Minister Dominello said.

“Governments do not and cannot have all the answers and I encourage all interested organisations and individuals to get involved in the public consultation process through attending a meeting or making an online submission.

“Your views will certainly be welcome, respected and responded to,” Minister Dominello said.

Information about the preliminary project applications and future infommation about the project can be found on the department of Planning website at - MP09_0039 - Mixed Use Development, Redfern RSL, Gibbons Street, Redfern

The proposed building is to contain:

·         active street frontages with shops at the ground floor level fronting both Redfern and Gibbons Streets;

·         new club premises for Redfern RSL at the 1st floor level

·         commercial office space at the 2nd and 3rd floor levels

·         apartments at the upper floor levels of the building.

The proposal will involve significant improvements to the public domain in terms of enhancing pedestrian linkages along Redfern Street between the Redfern Railway Station and the Redfern Town Centre on the eastern side of Regent Street by:

·         eliminating vehicular access and vehicle/pedestrian conflict in Redfern Street

·         establishing an attractive, vibrant and active street frontage

·         providing shade and shelter for people using the link

·         casual surveillance of the public domain over extended hours by virtue of the use and operation of the proposed shops, offices, club and apartments.

The developer is particularly interested in feed back on the public domain surrounding the building. 

The Neighbourhood Advisory Boards (NAB) are made up of elected tenant representatives, and both Government and Non-Government agencies who work together to discuss and address issues and concerns important to tenants on the Public Housing Estates.
