Where is the Heritage and Tourism Taskforce and what protection will there be for heritage in the ATP Sale?

]]> No publisher REDWatch Meeting 2009-08-25T03:13:48Z Event Erskineville, Newtown & Darlington Pedestrian, Cycling & Traffic Calming Plan Feedback - 2 September 2009 http://www.redwatch.org.au/Events/090902cos To improve your local area for walkers, cylists and local traffic the City is developing a series of Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Plans. These are community-driven plans which will manage and calm traffic on local roads, increase pedestrian, bicycle and public transport access and provide better safety and amenity for local residents. The City’s PCTC plans will also:

  • improve walking access to, and safety around, local schools
  • prioritise installation of new street crossings and traffic calming devices
  • plan for improved and new cycleways
  • improve access to public transport
  • re-direct through-traffic to State and regional roads

 

What will happen at the meeting?

To finalise a PCTC plan, the City of Sydney works very closely with local residents taking the following steps

  • We will present our draft PCTC plan
  • You will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the draft plan

Proposals in the draft plan include:

  • Pedestrian and cycling access improvements across the area, including intersections on Wilson Street and Abercrombie Street
  • Working with the RTA to install new crossings missing at signalised intersections and a new crossing along Mallett Street
  • Cycleway projects on Missenden Road, Wilson Street and Shepherd Street
  • Kerb extensions and additional crossings along King Street, and potential new bike parking.

The Australian prison population has increased by nearly 50 per cent over the past ten years (ABS 2003). More alarming is the reported 110 per cent increase in the female prisoner population, the 8 per cent increase in the unsentenced prison population, and the 5 per cent increase in the Indigenous prisoner population over the same period.

“The advice to me is we have still got 500 cells empty. I don’t mind if we fill them up, and if we fill them up and have to build another jail, we’ll build another jail” (Premier Nathan Rees).

“As a Labor party activist in the inner city, and a branch secretary for more than 20 years, if this State Government goes any further down the track of privatisation of prisons, I could not in good conscience vote Labor in 2012 – and it hurts me to say that” (Trevor Davies, Co-Convenor, Social Justice Task Group, Sydney Presbytery of the Uniting Church). 

“It’s all too easy to treat people in poverty or with mental health and addiction problems as criminals, but what does it achieve? It’s time to admit the high cost, in human and financial terms, of the failed policies of successive State governments, and to rethink our approach to criminal corrections” (Rev.
