REDWatch Monthly Meeting - Housing NSW - Planning Mixed Development in Redfern Waterloo

At this months meeting we will be joined by Housing NSW for an update on their proposal for the Master Planning for the redevelopment of Redfern and Waterloo public housing. This will be followed by a discussion of what issues have been encountered in other mixed housing developments and what will need to be done to avoid such problkems here.

Our Guests at the REDWatch meeting on Thursday will be Bernie Coates and David Lilley from Housing NSW. They will be giving us an update on how HNSW propose to implement the Federally funded Master Planning for the Redevelopment of Public Housing Estates in Redfern and Waterloo.

We have also asked that in addition to the update that we start to get into some of the issues. As the Shelter Conference speakers identified some of the problems that have resulted from mixed housing regeneration in other places we thought this would be a good place to start. We have asked HNSW start off looking at the issues that have been identified elsewhere that will need to be addressed in Redfern Waterloo if such shortcomings are not to be repeated here. This will hopefully focus people on some of the challenges that will need to be addressed. David Lilley is collecting the research evidence relating to the project and is following the debates about social mix within HNSW.

Ross Smith has pulled together some extracts from the Shelter Conference and some other material including some of his Rimfire Review contributions and we have add these to a new section on the REDWatch website called Social Mix - Will it solve the problems? at www.redwatch.org.au/issues/public-housing/redevelopment/mix. If you have other suggestions as to material that should be added then please let me know. Please have try and have a quick look at some of the material prior to the REDWatch meeting so you are aware of some of the issues to be discussed.

We have also had a bit of a reorganisation of the public housing section of the REDWatch site and there is now a tab on the top of the REDWatch website that leads to at www.redwatch.org.au/issues/public-housing. It is not our intention to cover everything to do with public housing but we do want to focus on Redfern & Waterloo and the issues that need to be addressed in our area. If you want all things public housing I suggest you add yourself to Garry Mallards Tenant Support Network email list and watch your email box fill up. Garry can be contacted at TSN@thenexus.org.au.

Given the interest of the RWA in the public housing issue through BEP2 RWA CEO Roy Wakelin-King may also be in attendance. He is also happy to answer any questions about the Redfern Waterloo Branding Project being undertaken by Roll Up Redfern. The REDWatch Co-ord Group have requested a community statement be issued that explains what the Branding is about.

I hope to see you at the meeting at The Factory Community Centre 67 Raglan Street Waterloo at 6pm Thursday 5 August 2010.

We have no guest speaker for this meeting but there are a few things we need to discuss from our March meeting with RWA CEO Roy Wakelin King before our next meeting with him in June. We have received answers to peoples questions to the RWA at the last meeting as well as some questions from the REDWatch Co-ord Group following the last meeting.

REDWatch held two public forums in April. The first was on Public Transport at which RailCorp talked about Redfern Station and South Sydney Community Transport addressed a range of community transport issues. The other meeting was with the VC of Sydney University and the Darlington Community about improving the neighbour relationship. I also participated in a meeting organised by Sydney Uni with the Lord Mayor about North Eveleigh. The University has now set up a local community page on its website at www.usyd.edu.au/visitors_community/local/index.shtml and has gone away to work on some of the issues raised. The latest South Sydney Herald has an article about the meeting, an add from the University and some comments from the RWA about North Eveleigh. You can download the latest SSH (4MB PDF) from www.southsydneyherald.com.au/pdf/SSH_MAY10.pdf . We need to evaluate these events and decide on any follow up events.

One of REDWatch’s ongoing concerns has been what is happening regarding Human Services. While the RWA denies there have been any shortcomings, it is encouraging that they have re-appointed a Director for Human Services. Melissa Gibson has been moving around talking to services and now the Inner Sydney Regional Council and the RWA are holding a forum for NGO’s and residents with the RWA on Thursday, 20th May at 3.30pm at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence. Please spread the word about this meeting (flyer attached) and try and get along for a discussion about Human Services. Please note that the timing is designed to encourage involvement by services and we realise that this time will not suit many residents. Residents can however come along to the report back by the RWA CEO at the REDWatch Meeting on 3 June and ask their questions.

Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce Eveleigh Sub-Committee

The Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce has been established to identify opportunities for the active conservation, interpretation and, where appropriate, the adaptive reuse of the heritage of the Redfern Waterloo area, in tandem with the revitalisation and renewal of the area. A project based approach has been chosen in order to achieve a broad and comprehensive treatment of the area’s diverse heritage values. The Taskforce is also seeking to establish a Sub-Committee to specifically address matters relating to the heritage of the former Eveleigh Railway Workshops.

When Council talked to local residents about upgrading Charles Kernan Reserve it was suggested it might include a food garden. In response an area has now been set aside for food growing, and will be developed as part of the renewal of the reserve. Council are holding a meeting for those who wish to be involved with the Food Garden on May 15. The letter sent to those who expressed an interest earlier is below.

Your new local food garden

When we talked to local residents about upgrading Charles Kernan Reserve, you suggested we might put in a food garden.

In response to your request an area has now been set aside for food growing, and will be developed as part of the renewal of the reserve.

A meeting has been organised to bring people together who are interested in developing and caring for this communal garden. If you want to be involved in this exciting project please come along on:

Saturday 15 May 2010, 2pm - 5pm
Redfern Community Centre
29-53 Hugo Street Redfern

For a complete plan of the improvements to the park please see over the page (see Plan of Charles Kernan Reserve Showing Food Garden ).

The City's Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan for a green, global and connected city can be achieved only through partnerships with you — our residents. Our community gardens program is an innovative way communities and the City can work together to enjoy and improve local green spaces, and share ideas about sustainable food.

Once a community group has been set up for this project, follow-up meetings will be organised to help plan and build the garden. These meetings will take place after work on the reserve is complete.

Please RSVP to the meeting by Monday 9 May 2010 by contacting Council's Community Gardrden Coordinator, Annie Walker on 9265 9786 or by email - anwalker@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au

Graffiti Action Day 2010

Graffiti vandalism has negative financial and social impact upon the community, specifically residents, business owners, local government and transport operators.
Graffiti Action Day is a result of a partnership between Keep Australia Beautiful & the NSW Government and is a first for Australia!
The key aims of the Graffiti Action Day are to:
• Engage the community in removal of graffiti
• Raise awareness of good graffiti removal methods
• Support non-government and community run facilities in repairing
damage caused by graffiti

Graffiti Action Day Sunday 2 May 2010

How to become involved:
1. Register. Send an email to graffitiactionday@kabnsw.org.au and advise of your location. You will be assigned a group to join as a volunteer.
2. Confirm the site co-ordinator. The site co-ordinator will usually be from your Local Council. However, if there is not a group in your area Keep Australia Beautiful may ask you to be a site co-ordinator and will send you a site co-ordinator form which needs to be completed before any work can begin. It involves your product requirements, risk assessment of the site and type of surface material you will be cleaning.
3. Get your graffiti kit. Once the site co-ordinator form is processed you will be directed how to pick up your free graffiti clean up kit.
4. Rally volunteers. If you are a site co-ordinator you will need to rally volunteers. This could be done through community groups, sporting clubs or schools. You will be supplied a poster in a pdf format which you can print locally and place in popular venues where appropriate. You will be emailed a media release that you can use to contact your local press and radio. Please encourage them to visit your group on Sunday 2 May.
5. Report. Once the day is over, email a brief summary of how the day went, what interest it attracted and any improvements you might suggest.

A poster will be displayed in our common areas in the Redfern Waterloo
areas from this week. We are keen to promote civic and community ownership
within public housing areas through this initiative.

We are
hoping that with your support and involvement, more sites across the Inner City
Area can be nominated. There are many ways that you can support us and our
residents, including but not limited to:

Joining us on the day as volunteers or
site coordinators,

Donation of refreshment or
giveaways.

Please
talk to Tuyen Duong, Project

(ph: 9268 3492 or mob: 0434 148 921) or email us on tuyen.duong@housing.nsw.gov.au
to let us know of your idea and support for this initiative or other sites that
should be nominated. Your support would be acknowledged as part of the promotion
and any feedback and media about the event.
