REDWatch Meeting - 6 May 2010 6pm

The Monthly meeting of REDWatch will be held at the Factory on Thursday 6 May 2010.

We have no guest speaker for this meeting but there are a few things we need to discuss from our March meeting with RWA CEO Roy Wakelin King before our next meeting with him in June. We have received answers to peoples questions to the RWA at the last meeting as well as some questions from the REDWatch Co-ord Group following the last meeting.

REDWatch held two public forums in April. The first was on Public Transport at which RailCorp talked about Redfern Station and South Sydney Community Transport addressed a range of community transport issues. The other meeting was with the VC of Sydney University and the Darlington Community about improving the neighbour relationship. I also participated in a meeting organised by Sydney Uni with the Lord Mayor about North Eveleigh. The University has now set up a local community page on its website at www.usyd.edu.au/visitors_community/local/index.shtml and has gone away to work on some of the issues raised. The latest South Sydney Herald has an article about the meeting, an add from the University and some comments from the RWA about North Eveleigh. You can download the latest SSH (4MB PDF) from www.southsydneyherald.com.au/pdf/SSH_MAY10.pdf . We need to evaluate these events and decide on any follow up events.

One of REDWatch’s ongoing concerns has been what is happening regarding Human Services. While the RWA denies there have been any shortcomings, it is encouraging that they have re-appointed a Director for Human Services. Melissa Gibson has been moving around talking to services and now the Inner Sydney Regional Council and the RWA are holding a forum for NGO’s and residents with the RWA on Thursday, 20th May at 3.30pm at the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence. Please spread the word about this meeting (flyer attached) and try and get along for a discussion about Human Services. Please note that the timing is designed to encourage involvement by services and we realise that this time will not suit many residents. Residents can however come along to the report back by the RWA CEO at the REDWatch Meeting on 3 June and ask their questions.

REDWatch has asked Suzie Matthews the City of Sydney Manager - Social Policy and Community Support, to make an opening presentation. This will be followed by presentations by other interested agencies and a discussion about what should follow the area’s Community Safety Plan. The forum will be held on Wednesday 6 May 2009 T the Factory at 6pm.

Since 2004 Redfern and Waterloo has had its own Community Safety Plan. It was one of the few initiatives from the Premiers Department’s Redfern Waterloo Partnership Project. The lead agencies was Council (first under South Sydney Council and then the City of Sydney) in conjunction with the Police. Following an evaluation the Council now proposes to no longer have a specific Community Safety Plan for the area, even though that evaluation recommends a process “to decide what needs to be done from now on” in Redfern Waterloo.

Is there still a need for a separate Redfern Waterloo Community Safety Plan?

Will Council’s broader Safe City Strategy adequately replace the local Community Safety Plan?

Can the Redfern Local Area Command Police Community Precinct Committee play a role in developing and monitoring a Redfern Waterloo Community Safety Plan in a manner similar to the old Community Safety Task Force?

REDFERN WATERLOO COMMUNITY RENEWAL FORUM Estate Renewal and Social Mix: The good, the bad and the ugly

Public housing estate renewal projects around the world aim to address disadvantage by creating more diverse communities. This is usually done by redeveloping estates to reduce the concentration of social housing and increase the numbers of private owners and renters. There is a lot of debate about whether this is the right approach to be taking, whether it works, and how to go about it.

This Forum will explore the issue from a number of angles: • David Lilley will outline the research on social mix and identify the issues • George Housakos will tell us about the Kensington Renewal Project in Melbourne and how public and private residents created a harmonious community, and • A panel of experts, including Peter Phibbs (UWS) and Michael Darcy (UWS) will lead discussion on what’s important and how all this might relate to Redfern and Waterloo. Please come along for a lively and informative event. Lunch provided. RSVP: By Monday 23 August 2010.
