The Australian prison population has increased by nearly 50 per cent over the past ten years (ABS 2003). More alarming is the reported 110 per cent increase in the female prisoner population, the 8 per cent increase in the unsentenced prison population, and the 5 per cent increase in the Indigenous prisoner population over the same period.

The Factory Community Centre has a 30 year history of engaging artists in community development projects.

In October 2012, along with our partners we will host the 12th World Festival of Children’s Theatre. Kids from all over the world will come to Australia to perform together, do workshops together and most... importantly make best friends for life.

And where will this happen?

- At Cockatoo Island, in the middle of Sydney Harbour...sleeping in tents, under the southern sky.

]]> No publisher REDWatch Meeting 2010-11-10T06:11:59Z Event Planning Changes - What it means to You! - 23 October 7.30pm http://www.redwatch.org.au/Events/121023isbpn The State Government recently published a “discussion” paper for changes to planning controls across NSW. This will replace planning legislation that has long underpinned the State’s planning controls. If approved, the changes fast track economic development across the inner city and are likely to result in overdevelopment in your neighbourhood. While reform is needed, the changes have been condemned as pro-developer and remove the wider public from the process. Notably, even ICAC have raised concerns! A “white” paper is being developed, with legislation to follow.  The proposed changes:

  • Remove your right to comment on a Development Application (DA) in your street
  • Are pro-developer
  • Do not mention the preservation of heritage suburbs nor environmental sustainability principles
  • Introduce “enterprise zones” into the area, which are a “free for all” for developers
  • Rely on “Private Certifiers” paid by developers to approve DAs (rather than Council)
  • “Consultation” is limited to an upfront “regional strategic planning phase” (and not specified)

A  COMMUNITY MEETING  has been organised,  so  you  are informed and can voice  your concerns.  The meeting  is at  Redfern Town Hall,  Pitt Street (off Cleveland Street),  so as many people  as possible  can attend.   The media, guest speakers from the Nature Conservation Council of NSW  and  Better Planning Network as well candidates for the Sydney by-election and  representatives from the City of Sydney have been invited.
We urge you to  attend this very  IMPORTANT meeting.   Without  large  scale  support, these changes are likely to be rail-roaded through. Make an evening of it by bringing your neighbours and friends. No publisher REDWatch Meeting 2008-04-07T08:00:13Z Event North Eveleigh Parks - Invitation to Contribute to Design, 24 November 2012 http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/statesignificant/northeveleigh/necs/ahousing/121124smda The SMDA has commenced the process for designing two parks at the western end of the North Eveleigh site. In accordance with the North Eveleigh Concept Plan, an application for the development of the parks must be submitted. This must occur prior or concurrently with the first application for new floor space. A private consultancy firm has been appointed to progress the design and submit this development application. The SMDA will seek to ensure that the community’s interests are incorporated in the design and will be undertaking consultation with the community and stakeholders.  Staff from the SMDA will have an information stall at Yaama Dhiyaan, 255 Wilson St, from 10am to 12pm on Saturday, 24 November 2012 to invite feedback from the community.

The SMDA would appreciate your time in attending and giving us your views in person. Construction of the parks will be linked to future development of the site.

Come to Yaama Dhiyaan on Saturday, 24 November 2012, fill out feedback form here and provide a separate submission to the SMDA.

Submissions or feedback forms need to be received by the SMDA by 9am Monday, 17 December 2012 to ensure these are considered in the park designs.

A development application will then be prepared for the parks. This will be lodged with the City of Sydney. The City of Sydney will publicly exhibit this application and the community can make further submissions on the park design at this time.

No publisher REDWatch Meeting 2008-09-20T08:11:49Z Event Neighbourhood Repairs Service – Waterloo http://www.redwatch.org.au/Events/100607wnr An information session for local services and stakeholders about the implementation of the Waterloo Green Neighbourhood Project, a three year pilot project that will be implemented in six high rise buildings in Waterloo. The project comprises three new services, each of which will provide employment and training opportunities for social housing residents. We are planning to commence recruitment for the Neighbourhood Repairs Service in June 2010. The Neighbourhood Repairs service will be delivered by Housing NSW in partnership with Fair Business, a not-for-profit organisation and Spotless, the head maintenance contractor for the area.

Neighbourhood Repairs Workers will be local social housing residents with an interest in undertaking a traineeship, gaining a trade qualification or using their existing qualification while receiving paid work. TAFE NSW will provide educational support and accredited training courses.

The project will operate from premises in Waterloo and will undertake routine maintenance work to public housing properties in the Inner City of Sydney.

Representatives from Housing NSW, Fair Business and Spotless will provide an overview of the service, discuss its success in Greater Western Sydney Division and advise you how to assist social housing residents who are interested in becoming a Neighbourhood Repairs worker.
