Nominations have been made, those nominated and their friends have been invited to attend the above celebration. The Factory CC will also be celebrating the recent upgrades to the centre.  At the event there will be a presentation of Certificates of Appreciation by special guests, followed by lunch. Bev Manton - the first elected female Chairperson of the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council - will deliver the inaugural Kevin Cook Lecture.

Named after Kevin Cook - the first Chairperson of NSWALC and the former General Secreatry of Tranby Aboriginal College - the lecture calls for open debate and frank discussions on changing the date of Australia Day from January 26.

Ms Manton will also formally launch the newly formed Aboriginal Coalition of NSW Organisations.

With the historical election of the first black President in the United States of America, hopes soared for other marginalised people of the world. In Australia, Aboriginal people mostly expressed their delight at the win but will it have any influence on our lives?

We ask three prominent Aboriginal people what they think of the President Elect and what it means for Indigenous people not only in Australia but internationally. We also hear their thoughts on whether Australia will have an Aboriginal Prime Minister in the very near future?

The City will provide two opportunities to view the live to air telecast on 13 February at 9am

  • Large screen in Martin Place in conjunction with the NSW State Government
  • Indoor and outdoor screens at the Redfern Community Centre, 29 Hugo Street Redfern.

In addition to the 9am screening, Redfern Community Centre will hold:

A replay of the formal apology from 3pm with our Acknowledgement to Country, speeches by Elders from the local Aboriginal community, members of the Stolen Generations, the Lord Mayor and young people from the local community.

Other activities throughout the day include a community BBQ, children’s activities, film screenings, and live entertainment.
A community bus to the Redfern event will leave from the following locations:

  • 8am - Juanita Nielsen Leisure Centre cnr of Nicholson & Dowling Streets, Woolloomooloo.
  • 8am - Ultimo Community Centre 40 William Henry St, Ultimo.
  • 8.15am Glebe Library 186 Glebe Point Rd, Glebe. (rear car park).

Redfern Legal Centre is able to attract approximately 30 000 volunteer hours per year and we estimate that through our volunteers we contribute the equivalent of $900,000 worth of services to the community each year. Come to our dinner & show your support!

David Marr is a feature writer for the Sydney Morning Herald having previously written for The Bulletin. His essay “His Master’s Voice: The Corruption of Public Debate under Howard” was published in Quarterly Essay 2007 (Issue 27). He received a Walkley Award for his work on Four Corners and is the author of the critically acclaimed biography of Australian writer Patrick White. He will speak on “The State of Justice”.
