]]> No publisher REDWatch Meeting 2012-10-17T09:30:00Z Event REDWatch Monthly Meeting - Housing NSW - Planning Mixed Development in Redfern Waterloo http://www.redwatch.org.au/Events/100803redw At this months meeting we will be joined by Housing NSW for an update on their proposal for the Master Planning for the redevelopment of Redfern and Waterloo public housing. This will be followed by a discussion of what issues have been encountered in other mixed housing developments and what will need to be done to avoid such problkems here. Our Guests at the REDWatch meeting on Thursday will be Bernie Coates and David Lilley from Housing NSW. They will be giving us an update on how HNSW propose to implement the Federally funded Master Planning for the Redevelopment of Public Housing Estates in Redfern and Waterloo.

We have also asked that in addition to the update that we start to get into some of the issues. As the Shelter Conference speakers identified some of the problems that have resulted from mixed housing regeneration in other places we thought this would be a good place to start. We have asked HNSW start off looking at the issues that have been identified elsewhere that will need to be addressed in Redfern Waterloo if such shortcomings are not to be repeated here. This will hopefully focus people on some of the challenges that will need to be addressed. David Lilley is collecting the research evidence relating to the project and is following the debates about social mix within HNSW.

Ross Smith has pulled together some extracts from the Shelter Conference and some other material including some of his Rimfire Review contributions and we have add these to a new section on the REDWatch website called  Social Mix - Will it solve the problems? at www.redwatch.org.au/issues/public-housing/redevelopment/mix. If you have other suggestions as to material that should be added then please let me know. Please have try and have a quick look at some of the material prior to the REDWatch meeting so you are aware of some of the issues to be discussed.

We have also had a bit of a reorganisation of the public housing section of the REDWatch site and there is now a tab on the top of the REDWatch website that leads to at www.redwatch.org.au/issues/public-housing. It is not our intention to cover everything to do with public housing but we do want to focus on Redfern & Waterloo and the issues that need to be addressed in our area. If you want all things public housing I suggest you add yourself to Garry Mallards Tenant Support Network email list and watch your email box fill up. Garry can be contacted at TSN@thenexus.org.au.

Given the interest of the RWA in the public housing issue through BEP2 RWA CEO Roy Wakelin-King may also be in attendance. He is also happy to answer any questions about the Redfern Waterloo Branding Project being undertaken by Roll Up Redfern. The REDWatch Co-ord Group have requested a community statement be issued that explains what the Branding is about.

]]> No publisher REDWatch Meeting 2010-06-02T00:55:00Z Event Waterloo Neighbour Advisory Board Action Group Bi-annual Review - The Gathering Event 2 http://www.redwatch.org.au/Events/wna100819 For the last two years, the Waterloo NAB has being piloting a new framework of engagement; this was achieved through the establishment of four thematic Action Groups. The time has come to review the progress of this new framework and celebrate the successes, and look at the lessons learnt and plan together for the framework which will take us through the next two years. So we invite all Residents and Agencies to come along and hear the reports of the action groups and help us to set the vision for the coming two years. Lunch provided This has included groups that looked at Tenant Participation and Maintenance, Learning and Employment Training, Community Safety, and Health. The groups ran a number of initiatives, from community events (such as Summer on the Green, and the Older Wiser Festival), overseeing the Waterloo Green Action plan and facilitating partnership based training courses for local young people.

These groups consisting of local residents and agencies from across sectors meeting regularly and who formed their own action plan to address community priorities set by local residents. In addition the Local Member and the Lord Mayor held two forums a year each where resident could raise issues directly with Heads of Government Agencies.

Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority - This organisation was announced in February 2010 by Premier Keneally Keneally Creates Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority as a part of the implementation of the Metropolitan Strategy and the Metropolitan Transport Plan. As part of a consultation discussion paper the community was asked about the nature of the proposed Authority. On 23 September The Minister for Planning announced the establishment of the Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority and part of the announcement was RWA assumed by new Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority. Subsequently there has been an RWA Statement on Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority in which the The CEO of the RWA advised that the work of the RWA will continue as per the current plans and that the Australian Technology Park will remain part of the RWA and will ultimately be transferred to the SMDA.

  • Installation artist Nigel Helyer’s “Ghost Train” soundscape – a collaboration with the Performance Space and part of a bigger idea for interpretive multimedia art in Eveleigh.
  • Sydney painter Jane Bennett who specializing in Sydney’s industrial heritage. Jane will be on site painting Eveleigh and adding to her substantial collection of evocative paintings of the Rail Yards, some of which will be on display.  
  • The Australian Bush Music Club will perform their collection of Rail Songs – some inspired directly by Eveleigh.
  • The film Australian Live Steam, produced by Dick Collingridge will be shown, featuring the Eveleigh Steam Workshop. 
  • A portion of the “Trains of Treasure” exhibition  will be displayed .  This well researched collection of pictures and stories describes  specific aspects of social history from the 1917 strike to the contribution of Aborigines to the  Eveleigh labour force.
  • Professional photographer Dean Golja, known for his brilliant ways of capturing people at work- from the quirky to the ordinary – will create a memorable visual archive of the day.

The RWA has engaged 3D Projects in association with Artscape and Only Human to prepare an Interpretation Plan for the Eveleigh Rail Yards Precinct. The specific aims of the Plan are to:

  • Guide and facilitate interpretation of the site’s heritage significance as a conservation process designed to sustain the site’s authenticity and character;
  • Identify existing audiences and visitor experiences on the Eveleigh site, including workers, neighbours resident in the district, railway tourists and school groups as well as quantify opportunities to enhance visitor numbers and experiences in each of these categories;
  • Achieve enhanced public understanding of the history of the area and its significance to residents, workers and visitors by fostering active links with the community, as well as with tourism, education and recreation activities;
  • Ensure interpretive devices and their content have the potential to engage and provoke public interest, are accessible, sustainable (in relation to maintenance, evaluation and review) reversible (in relation to heritage fabric) and compatible with the sites for which they are chosen.
]]> No publisher REDWatch Meeting 2010-10-17T23:35:00Z Event ‘Gamarada Aboriginal Men’s Healing and Life Skills Development Program’ http://www.redwatch.org.au/Events/090519piac Description: The community screening is a Gamarada initiative and the result of a partnership between the films producer and director and the Gamarada team, which includes: David Leah, David Beaumont, Shane Phillips, Mark Carroll and Program director Ken Zulumovski. Following the screening will be a question and answer session which will enable community members to engage with the film makers and key community representatives working in the field of men’s health, social and emotional well being. 

 Representation from local Indigenous leaders and identities will be in attendance and invitations have also gone out to key figures in NSW Health, Redfern Waterloo Authority and local MP’s. 

The screening will take place after a Welcome to Country by a local Aboriginal Leader, followed by an introduction to the movie by the Co-Creator and Producer of Men’s Group – John L Simpson and Director – Michael Joy.  After the screening we will conduct a Q and A session about the making of the movie and the positive effects it has had on other communities.  

Until recently Gamarada has existed without funding and we are seeking sponsorship for this event. Ciaron O’Reilly has spent his adult life with Dorothy Day’s Catholic Worker movement (www.catholicworker.org), living and working with the homeless in Australia, England, Ireland and the United States while engaging in prophetic nonviolent resistance to war preparations and war making. 
 
Fool for Christ: the story of Dorothy Day is a stage play written and performed by Sarah Melici. This film version is unavailable in Australia.
