Sydney Uni Info Stall on Abercrombie Street Development - 22 Sept

The University of Sydney will host a stall at Eveleigh Market on Saturday 22 September from 8 am to 1 pm, when it invites the local community to find out more about its plans to build a world-class business school facility in Darlington.

The
University of Sydney to host community information stall at Eveleigh Market

The Abercrombie Precinct will include student accommodation, and
increase the Business School’s ability to attract the very best students,
teachers and researchers from around the world.

“Keeping the community informed about the progress of the Abercrombie Precinct project is very important to the
University of Sydney,” said Greg
Robinson, Director of Campus Infrastructure and Services.

“The feedback we received from the community following public exhibition
in May this year was extremely valuable and helped us to refine the design even
further.

“In particular, the University has reduced the height of the planned
student accommodation building and increased setbacks to better integrate the
development with surrounding properties.”

Through consultation activities and meetings with key local community
groups, the University of Sydney understands that traffic and parking are
important issues for local residents. To minimise these impacts, the revised
design includes:

fewer car spaces within the site to reduce the number of car
movements in and out of the precinct

a safe school drop-off zone directly adjacent to the school
entrance

a focus on pedestrian safety and ease of access through the site,
including a pedestrian path to the school that avoids the need to walk past the
proposed car park entry on Abercrombie Street.

The University is currently in discussions with the NSW Department of
Planning and Infrastructure about the conditions of approval for the project.

“Subject to approval, we will undertake preliminary work to remove the
demountable buildings on Codrington Street later this year,” Mr Robinson said.

“In the meantime, we look forward to continuing discussions with our
neighbours and local residents about this leading-edge development.

“I urge everyone who would like to find out more about this exciting
project to come and visit us at our information stall at the Eveleigh Market,”
said Mr Robinson.

Information on the Abercrombie Precinct is also on display in the foyer
of the University’s Services Building, 22 Codrington Street. You can access the
foyer between 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

The State Government recently published a “discussion” paper for changes to planning controls across NSW. This will replace planning legislation that has long underpinned the State’s planning controls. If approved, the changes fast track economic development across the inner city and are likely to result in overdevelopment in your neighbourhood. While reform is needed, the changes have been condemned as pro-developer and remove the wider public from the process. Notably, even ICAC have raised concerns!

A “white” paper is being developed, with legislation to follow. The proposed changes:

Remove your right to comment on a Development Application (DA) in your street

Are pro-developer

Do not mention the preservation of heritage suburbs nor environmental sustainability principles

Introduce “enterprise zones” into the area, which are a “free for all” for developers

Rely on “Private Certifiers” paid by developers to approve DAs (rather than Council)

“Consultation” is limited to an upfront “regional strategic planning phase” (and not specified)

A COMMUNITY MEETING has been organised, so you are informed and can voice your concerns. The meeting is at Redfern Town Hall, Pitt Street (off Cleveland Street), so as many people as possible can attend. The media, guest speakers from the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and Better Planning Network as well candidates for the Sydney by-election and representatives from the City of Sydney have been invited.
We urge you to attend this very IMPORTANT meeting. Without large scale support, these changes are likely to be rail-roaded through.
Our Guests at the REDWatch meeting on Thursday will be Bernie Coates and David Lilley from Housing NSW. They will be giving us an update on how HNSW propose to implement the Federally funded Master Planning for the Redevelopment of Public Housing Estates in Redfern and Waterloo.

We have also asked that in addition to the update that we start to get into some of the issues. As the Shelter Conference speakers identified some of the problems that have resulted from mixed housing regeneration in other places we thought this would be a good place to start. We have asked HNSW start off looking at the issues that have been identified elsewhere that will need to be addressed in Redfern Waterloo if such shortcomings are not to be repeated here. This will hopefully focus people on some of the challenges that will need to be addressed. David Lilley is collecting the research evidence relating to the project and is following the debates about social mix within HNSW.

Ross Smith has pulled together some extracts from the Shelter Conference and some other material including some of his Rimfire Review contributions and we have add these to a new section on the REDWatch website called Social Mix - Will it solve the problems? at www.redwatch.org.au/issues/public-housing/redevelopment/mix. If you have other suggestions as to material that should be added then please let me know. Please have try and have a quick look at some of the material prior to the REDWatch meeting so you are aware of some of the issues to be discussed.

We have also had a bit of a reorganisation of the public housing section of the REDWatch site and there is now a tab on the top of the REDWatch website that leads to at www.redwatch.org.au/issues/public-housing. It is not our intention to cover everything to do with public housing but we do want to focus on Redfern & Waterloo and the issues that need to be addressed in our area. If you want all things public housing I suggest you add yourself to Garry Mallards Tenant Support Network email list and watch your email box fill up. Garry can be contacted at TSN@thenexus.org.au.

Given the interest of the RWA in the public housing issue through BEP2 RWA CEO Roy Wakelin-King may also be in attendance. He is also happy to answer any questions about the Redfern Waterloo Branding Project being undertaken by Roll Up Redfern. The REDWatch Co-ord Group have requested a community statement be issued that explains what the Branding is about.

I hope to see you at the meeting at The Factory Community Centre 67 Raglan Street Waterloo at 6pm Thursday 5 August 2010.

Regards,

Geoffrey Turnbull

For the last two years, the Waterloo NAB has being piloting a new framework of engagement; this was achieved through the establishment of four thematic Action Groups.

The time has come to review the progress of this new framework and celebrate the successes, and look at the lessons learnt and plan together for the framework which will take us through the next two years.
So we invite all Residents and Agencies to come along and hear the reports of the action groups and help us to set the vision for the coming two years.

Lunch provided

This has included groups that looked at Tenant Participation and Maintenance, Learning and Employment Training, Community Safety, and Health. The groups ran a number of initiatives, from community events (such as Summer on the Green, and the Older Wiser Festival), overseeing the Waterloo Green Action plan and facilitating partnership based training courses for local young people.

These groups consisting of local residents and agencies from across
sectors meeting regularly and who formed their own action plan to
address community priorities set by local residents. In addition the
Local Member and the Lord Mayor held two forums a year each where
resident could raise issues directly with Heads of Government Agencies.
