The Inner West Community Forum on Tuesday 17 November at Erskineville Town Hall includes updates on the Newtown Railway Station upgrade, the UTS City Campus Master Plan and Frasers Broadway's CUB redevelopment.

Presentations at the forum, for Chippendale, Darlington, Newtown, Erskineville and Eveleigh residents, will also include information on City's cycleway network, including separated cycleway projects on Missenden Road and Wilson, Abercrombie, Codrington and Shepherd Streets.

City staff will present on how we can save energy and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Our vision for a sustainable Sydney is only achievable with your involvement and support.

From 6pm, you will be able to discuss your concerns with Councillors,

City staff and local Police before formal presentations begin at 6.45pm.

IMPROVEMENTS FOR WALKERS, CYCLISTS AND LOCAL TRAFFIC

These plans will manage and calm traffic on local roads, increase pedestrian, bicycle and public transport access and provide better safety and amenity for local residents. The plans also aim to:

* improve walking access to, and safety around, local schools;

* prioritise installation of new street crossings and traffic calming devices;

* plan for improved and new cycleways;

* improve access to public transport ; and

* re-direct through-traffic to State and regional roads

A community meeting for the Erskineville, Newtown and Darlington Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Plan will be held in conjunction with the Inner West Community Forum on Tuesday 31 March at Rydges, 9 Missenden Road Camperdown.

This community meeting will be an opportunity for the Vice Chancellor to inform the community of the University's proposals in its recently produced "Green Paper" about its future. Included in the paper is the statement that “We believe that a coordinated strategy for engagement with the local community should be devised and implemented as a matter of priority.” You can download the paper from: www.usyd.edu.au/about/strategy/green_paper/index.shtml

REDWatch has arranged this meeting with Sydney University to begin discussions with Darlington, Redfern and Waterloo residents about how the community and the University can work together for mutual benefit.

While it is expected there will be some discussion about the University's interest in the North Eveleigh site, their proposal to develop the Abercrombie St - Codrington St - Darlington St block and eventually redevelop much of the existing Darlington campus these will not be the main focus of this meeting.

A further meeting, organised by Sydney University, will be held at Track B - Carriage Works on Wednesday, 28 April 2010 from 6.30-8.00pm to start a discussion with the community about North Eveleigh, including the University’s interest in renewing the site.  This meeting will provide opportunities for the community and interested politicians to have their say about North Eveleigh.

While it shares the name with Sydney University it is not part of the University being formed originally by the students from Women's College at Sydney University and was led, until the 1960s, by societies auspiced by the Union and was supported by the voluntary efforts of academics, their families and undergraduates. No publisher REDWatch Meeting 2012-07-15T00:20:00Z Link Neighbourhood Repairs Service – Waterloo http://www.redwatch.org.au/Events/100607wnr An information session for local services and stakeholders about the implementation of the Waterloo Green Neighbourhood Project, a three year pilot project that will be implemented in six high rise buildings in Waterloo. The project comprises three new services, each of which will provide employment and training opportunities for social housing residents. We are planning to commence recruitment for the Neighbourhood Repairs Service in June 2010. The Neighbourhood Repairs service will be delivered by Housing NSW in partnership with Fair Business, a not-for-profit organisation and Spotless, the head maintenance contractor for the area.

Neighbourhood Repairs Workers will be local social housing residents with an interest in undertaking a traineeship, gaining a trade qualification or using their existing qualification while receiving paid work. TAFE NSW will provide educational support and accredited training courses.

The project will operate from premises in Waterloo and will undertake routine maintenance work to public housing properties in the Inner City of Sydney.

Representatives from Housing NSW, Fair Business and Spotless will provide an overview of the service, discuss its success in Greater Western Sydney Division and advise you how to assist social housing residents who are interested in becoming a Neighbourhood Repairs worker.

This will be an opportunity for community people to ask Jim their Questions and have a community focused discussion. Jim is the author of “Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle Way”. You can use these links to find out more about Neighbor Power and see some extracts on Google Books at Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle Way. The Book can be borrowed from City of Sydney Libraries. Jim has had considerable experience both as a community organiser and then working in Government working with Communities. His experience with dealing with community building, community based planning, shutters on shops, running a Department of Neighbourhoods etc highlight the benefits for both government and communities of working together and have relevance to Redfern Waterloo. Jim has previously done some work with the City of Sydney Council.

REDWatch has previously had a presentation about Jim's work in Seatlle and how it might apply to Redfern Waterloo from Councillor Marcelle Hoff as a result of earlier work done by Jim with the City of Sydney. Jim has also previously spoken at a CoS session for Community Groups in the City of Sydney and there was considerable support for trying some of the initiative he used in Seatlle.

Graffiti Action Day is a result of a partnership between Keep Australia Beautiful & the NSW Government and is a first for Australia! The key aims of the Graffiti Action Day are to: • Engage the community in removal of graffiti • Raise awareness of good graffiti removal methods • Support non-government and community run facilities in repairing damage caused by graffiti The Inner City area has nominated the following four sites:

Graffiti Action Day Sunday 2 May 2010

How to become involved:
1. Register. Send an email to graffitiactionday@kabnsw.org.au and advise of your location. You will be assigned a group to join as a volunteer.
2. Confirm the site co-ordinator. The site co-ordinator will usually be from your Local Council. However, if there is not a group in your area Keep Australia Beautiful may ask you to be a site co-ordinator and will send you a site co-ordinator form which needs to be completed before any work can begin. It involves your product requirements, risk assessment of the site and type of surface material you will be cleaning.
3. Get your graffiti kit. Once the site co-ordinator form is processed you will be directed how to pick up your free graffiti clean up kit.
4. Rally volunteers. If you are a site co-ordinator you will need to rally volunteers. This could be done through community groups, sporting clubs or schools. You will be supplied a poster in a pdf format which you can print locally and place in popular venues where appropriate. You will be emailed a media release that you can use to contact your local press and radio. Please encourage them to visit your group on Sunday 2 May.
5. Report. Once the day is over, email a brief summary of how the day went, what interest it attracted  and any improvements you might suggest.

A poster will be displayed in our common areas in the Redfern Waterloo areas from this week. We are keen to promote civic and community ownership within public housing areas through this initiative.

We are hoping that with your support and involvement, more sites across the Inner City Area can be nominated. There are many ways that you can support us and our residents, including but not limited to:

  • Joining us on the day as volunteers or site coordinators,
  • Donation of refreshment or giveaways.
