Coming Events (entered on the REDWatch website)

RWA Community Forum Saturday 4 march 2006 1-3pm Redfern Town Hall

RWA will hold a Community Forum for the Redfern Waterloo community on Saturday. The Draft RWA Built Environment Plan (BEP) will be discussed. Pass the word to your friends and neighbours.

The RWA established Community Forums to “provide the Minister with advice on the broad strategic direction of the Redfern-Waterloo Plan and provides the community with a direct link to the Minister.” It is not known if the Minister who has the final say about what the RWA and the BEP does will be attending.

REDWatch Round Table on the BEP – Tuesday 7th March 6pm Redfern Community Centre

At the last REDWatch meeting it was decided to hold a round table for residents and community organisations without the RWA so that people could share their concerns about the RWA plans and hear the concerns of others in the area. These concerns could then be reflected in each other’s submissions as appropriate and if there was a wish for any further joint work on the BEP this could be decided on the night. The time has been chosen to allow both for interested residents and organisations to be represented. We would encourage people to attend one of the RWA information sessions or the Community Forum prior to the Round Table. For further information contact Geoff Turnbull on 9318 0824. You may also find two information sheets on the REDWatch site useful these are Summary of the RWA Draft Built Environment Plan Download (PDF 22 KB) and The Redfern Waterloo Plan as seen through the RED Strategy Looking Glass Download .

Long RWA BEP Information Sessions 4-7pm March 2nd (Thurs), 8th (Wed) and 9th (Thurs)

According to the RWA’s BEP Q&A page the RWA has included three long information sessions in their briefing programme that runs every afternoon from 4pm until Friday 10th March. While most afternoons the sessions will go from 4-5pm three afternoons sessions will go from 4-7pm. Information Sessions are held at the Redfern-Waterloo Authority Level 11, Tower 2, 1 Lawson Square Redfern at the following times: 4 - 5 pm Mon 27th, Tues 28th Feb, Wed 1st, Fri 3rd, Mon 6th, Tues 7th, Fri 10th March 4 - 7 pm Thurs 2nd , Wed 8th , Thurs 9th March.

RWA Website adds FAQs, individual maps and text version of the BEP

The RWA has made some additions to their website including the text version of the Draft BEP ( 575 KB) as well as smaller versions of all the maps in the Built Environment Plan. These documents can be downloaded from http://www.redfernwaterloo.nsw.gov.au/publications/reports.htm . The RWA has also added a Frequently Asked Questions for the BEP on their website at http://www.redfernwaterloo.nsw.gov.au/faq/faq_draft_built_env_plan.html .

Marian Park under threat by Draft RWA BEP

One of the contentious proposals in the RWA Built Environment Plan is the proposal for Marian Park next to the Watertower. Residents of the Watertower have understandably reacted to the suggestion that someone might build an 18 storey building on their park and RWA CEO Robert Domm is meeting soon with Watertower residents to discuss the issue. There are a few twists and turns in the story about the park, who owns it, what it was zoned and if you would like to find out more we suggest you visit http://marianpark.net/category/history-of-the-park/ . This is part of a site being put together around the Marian Park issue and more material will be added in the near future so come back and have another look in a few days time.

Continued Comments on the RWA Draft BEP

Clover Moore’s Mayoral Minute at City of Sydney Council Meeting on 27th February 2006 received support from all councillors and Council will prepare a submission to the RWA on the BEP. The Minute sets out some initial concerns and can be found at 3.2 Redfern Waterloo Authority Built Environment Plan| PDF 19Kb . In our last update we missed Verity Firth’s excellent reply http://www.redwatch.org.au/media/060221australian/  to Ross Fitzgerald’s article. Verity’s reply is equally appropriate to Frank Sartor’s article the following day which we also mentioned last update. Elizabeth Farrelly’s The reality behind the Redfern plan: a boon for the big end of town has also provided commentary on the BEP and its launch while the Darlington and Redfern Branches of the ALP have issued a media release setting out their continued opposition to the RWA’s position on the Block.

Stabling Yards Update

We have added the latest update from the No Stabling Yards Group on the REDWatch website at http://www.redwatch.org.au/RWA/statesignificant/stabling/060224stabling/

Sydney Central Courier on Line

There are places in Redfern Waterloo that it is impossible to get the Sydney Central Courier (the areas local advertising glossy) delivered. People in Lawson Street, the Block and in many parts of Waterloo have not been able to get this paper even though it from time to time has some good articles of local interest and carries advertising for the City Council and the RWA. The Sydney Central Courier is now on line at http://www.sydneycentralcourier.com.au/ . You will need to download the DjVu plug-in for your browser (up to 7.4MB depending on your browser) to be able to see the pages on the site but there is a link there when you first visit.
