Elizabeth Street Redfern “Build to Rent”
On 2 August 2018 REDWatch held a forum on the Elizabeth Street Build to Rent model. As we explained in our email update LAHC got itself a bit tangled up and organising the meeting was a bit like an episode of Utopia. In spite if this we had a useful session unpacking this model which has some major attractions as part of the Communities Plus program - mainly that it does not sell off public housing lands.

A Conversation on Human Services in the Redfern/ Waterloo Area
On Thursday 3 May 2018 REDWatch held a Roundtable on Human Services. Through caseworkers we found six people to start the REDWatch session by talking about their experience of the human services system and how it could be improved. This was then followed by a facilitated conversation with the broader attendees who had an interest in the human services system about what needed to be changed in the human services system. This conversation was led by Lyn Lormer from the Local Community Services Association (LCSA).

It is with great sadness that I let you know of the death today of Irene Doutney at the St Vincent’s Hospice. Irene has been unwell for some years outliving doctors initial expectations. Plans will be made this week for a celebration Irene’s life probably here somewhere in Redfern and will let you know arrangements when know.

On Wednesday 30 May 2018 UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation (UGDC) and Transport for NSW / Sydney Metro released their draft proposal for the Waterloo Metro Quarter (Station block) and held their first information session. Here is a quick guide to what was released.
Metro quarter to open without trains
The construction of large buildings around a new metro railway station at Waterloo in Sydney's inner south will be fast-tracked after planning for them was separated from the massive redevelopment of a nearby Public housing estate, writes Matt O'Sullivan in The Sun Herald of 27 May 2018.
What do we know about what is planned for the Metro Quarter from the announcement
The Metro Quarter will be integrated with the new Waterloo Sydney Metro Station and will encompass a new Metro Station and over station development, including new homes (including social and affordable housing), shops, community health services / community services and a new public / community plaza (concept only image) with an adjoining community building. The Metro Quarter Precinct is bounded by Botany Road, Cope Street, Raglan and Wellington Street. The Metro Quarter will be delivered ahead of the wider Waterloo Estate redevelopment and aims to be completed by 2022 before the trains are expected in 2024.
