Housing NSW are holding street corner meetings around the area in the last week of the exhibition of the Built Environment Plan 2 for the redevelopment of the Redfern and Waterloo Public Housing Estates. The full list of information sessions are below.

REDWatch, as well as a number of other stakeholders from Redfern and Waterloo, have requested research material on the topic of social mix. Below is a preliminary overview of some of the material available, with a focus on material that is available for download free of charge. It is proposed that more extensive work be undertaken in the near future, in consultation with the emerging Redfern and Waterloo Community Learning and Research Committee. This will include a substantial list of journal articles and summary notes on their relevance to Redfern and Waterloo. This material has been supplied by Davis Lilley at Housing NSW on 16 February 2011.

This table shows the likely location of Infill & new units in the redevelopment proposed under BEP2. REDWatch has used the RWA supplied estimate of 85 square meters per unit to analyze the floor space controls. The table shows that the controls would allow for 7108 units of 85sm with some of this space being taken up by commercial. Using the BEP2 information it is possible to calculate the number of 85sm units on each redeveloped block and what is required in infill developments on the high-rise blocks. A greater infill could be achieved as indicated in Appendix A however to achieve this the existing average floor space will need to be lower than the 85sm average used by the RWA. File is 78KB PDF.

The RWA placed its Draft Plan for Built Environment Phase 2 (BEP2) on public exhibition on 27th January 2011. The Draft BEP2 proposes new planning controls for public housing estates in Redfern Waterloo and Eveleigh and is on exhibition until 28th February 2011. As part of the exhibition the RWA has arranged seven information days at Redfern Town Hall. This is one of them.

The City of Sydney engaged consultants HBO+EMTB to undertake an Urban Design Study for Redfern and Waterloo in 2006. This study formed the basis of the controls City of Sydney placed in their proposed LEP which was submitted to the Department of Planning for exhibition approval in 2010. When the council was given approval to exhibit their LEP the department of Planning instructed them to remove the area covered by the RWA's BEP2. The RWA BEP2 study accepted the Councils controls in the Conservation area but proposed increased controls for the concentrated public housing area. Here REDWatch has compares the floor space recommendations of both studies (provided in the BEP2 Report) and shows how the 35% increase in floor space proposed by the RWA BEP2 is made up.
