This month the Redfern Waterloo Preliminary Master Plan Project is focusing on connections in and around the neighbourhoods. As part of that focus, we are considering community facilities and local services.
There are many types of community facilities and services. Shops, churches, health services, clubs, neighbourhood halls, local businesses and, government and non-government services. Community centres are one type of community facility.
There are many ideas about what makes a good community centre. One set of ideas is described in the principles for community centres prepared by Landcom. A guide which includes the principles can be downloaded from the Landcom website. http://www.landcom.nsw.gov.au/content/publication-and-programs/the-landcom-guidelines.aspx
Consider visiting community centre's libraries and community centres in and around the inner city to see examples of community facilities and think about what you might want included in the preliminary masterplan for your neighbourhood.
Some of the inner city centres run by City of Sydney include:
- Waterloo Library 770 Elizabeth St, Waterloo
- The Ron Williams Centre 5-11 Kepos St, Redfern
- Redfern Community Centre 29-53 Hugo St, Redfern
- Surrey Hills Library 405 Crown St, Surry Hills
- And the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre upstairs
- Ultimo Community Centre Level 1, 40 William Henry St, Ultimo
- King's Cross Library Level 1, 50-52 Darlinghurst St, King's Cross
