NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.  A time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. Find out more about the origins and history of NAIDOC Week. http://www.naidoc.org.au/

Redfern SDN – Brighter Futures and Day-care Centre is going to be taking part and celebrating together as a united group and community to place hands in the garden bed under the tree at the front of SDN- have morning tea and time for reflection.

First Sea of Hands was held on the 12 October 1997, in front of Parliament House, Canberra. The Sea of Hands was created as a powerful, physical representation of the Citizen’s Statement on Native Title. The Citizen’s Statement was a petition circulated by ANTaR to mobilise non-Indigenous support for native title and reconciliation.

http://antar.org.au/sea-hands The Sea of Hands has become a symbol of the People’s Movement for Reconciliation. Over 300,000 Australians have signed their names on one of 120,000 plastic hands that make up the Sea of Hands, to show their support for Native Title and Reconciliation. The Sea of Hands has been installed in every major city and many regional locations throughout Australia, and continues to gather signatures everywhere it appears. Today, the hands symbolise community support for reconciliation, rights and respect.

Please come along and support, celebrate and participate…………9.30 till 11.00am
