You may have seen the article in Saturday’s Sydney Morning Herald regarding the possibility of a new Waterloo Railway station linked to a high rise development of the Waterloo public housing estate - Rail war pits students against tenants.

The next REDWatch meeting at 6pm on Thursday 2nd July  will focus on the Waterloo Station proposal. The Government parties with an interest in the site will be represented to explain it to the community so people can understand and make their comments on the proposals.

It is a complex proposal because Transport for NSW is consulting on a Sydney Metro railway station at Sydney University or in Waterloo near Cope and Botany Road probably south of the Raglan Street shops. The City of Sydney has earlier proposed a station in Waterloo on the airport line but this option does not seem to be on the Transport for NSW agenda. UrbanGrowth NSW has proposed high density redevelopment, linked to the Waterloo station, on the Land and Housing Corporation owned Waterloo public housing estate managed by Housing NSW.

You can see the density UrbanGrowth C2E is considering with a Waterloo station in this slide from a recent UrbanGrowth Community consultation - Indicative Density Central to Eveleigh May 30 2015. Note the new development which is not on public housing land between Cope and Botany Road – this is where a Waterloo station is expected.

Representatives from Transport for NSW and UrbanGrowth will present at the REDWatch meeting and representatives from other organisations will be on a panel to respond to questions. We have also asked Prof Michael Darcy, who is experienced in engagement with public housing communities, to participate as an independent expert.

This will be your opportunity to find out what is proposed so you can make comments to Transport for NSW about the Metro proposal or to UrbanGrowth Central to Eveleigh about their urban renewal plans. Below are the links for their current on line consultations:

·         Sydney Metro have their consultation underway until 17th July. You can see the Have your say on the University of Sydney or Waterloo Station option  and more generally Make a submission

·         UrbanGrowth NSW Central to Eveleigh is consulting on a 10 actions including Redfern Station at http://engage.centraltoeveleigh.com.au/city_thinking_home until Sunday 12 July 2015.

Sydney Metro says of the Waterloo Station option:

A new metro station at Waterloo would help revitalise the Waterloo precinct and support the extension of the CBD to the south.

It would also:

  • Provide a high quality connection with bus services along Botany Road
  • Provide additional connectivity to Australian Technology Park and Redfern Station
  • Contribute to the NSW Government objective to transform Waterloo and Redfern.

The metro station would also allow further development and expansion of the Global Economic Corridor between the Sydney CBD and Green Square.

Hope to see you at The Factory Community Centre at 6pm on Thursday 2nd July for the discussion. Please pass this email or the attached flyer on to others that might be interested.
