This sheet was prepared in 2024 by the Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA) for the Waterloo Redevelopment Group. It compares ownership, management, dwellings under management, eligibility for Commonwealth Rent Assistance, regulation and complaints across the three different types of social housing. These are Public Housing, Aboriginal Housing and Community Housing. Please note that figures in this document reflect a snapshot available in May 2024 however the general descriptions in this fact sheet remain relevant in understanding the key elements of social housing.

This is the City of Sydney written response to a REDWatch's request for information on Council's proposal to open up George Street Waterloo to left in left out at McEvoy Street. This proposal was referred to briefly in the Waterloo South Concept Plan where Stockland advised that nothing they were doing would prevent this option in the future. Council in its submission asked Stockland to progress this option rather than a closed street with a large turning circle. With a proposal also to close Raglan Street opposite the Metro to cars (in the process of being changed), REDWatch requested further information from Council about its proposal and the reasoning behind it. The REDWatch spokesperson was briefed by Council staff about the proposal but an invitation by REDWatch to Council to present to a REDWatch meeting in July did not give Council sufficient time to prepare and for REDWatch to promote a meeting. This Correspondence and Council's Waterloo South Concept submission contains the only public information available on this proposal in late June 2026. REDWatch is concerned that many will see this as a significant change to the Waterloo South proposal and that there should be an opportunity for the proposal to be explained to the community and for the community to have the opportunity to raise any concerns and have them considered.

The Waterloo South Concept Plan exhibition closes on 2nd June 2026. REDWatch has been asked by tenants about what the issues are they should be commenting upon. There is no easy answer. The exhibition time is much shorter than previously, and a lot else has been happening, so REDWatch has not been able to go through the documents in a way that we would normally like to do. This short timeframe also has impacted Council which has previously been able to complete its submission and also share its concerns with the community. Given these limitations below are some ideas you might like to look at for your submission if you have not put in anything yet.

This submission was made to the City of Sydney regarding its South Eveleigh to Waterloo Metro walking and cycling improvements Exhibition in March 2026. The REDWatch submission is based on feedback through our social media, participation in community meetings and after holding a public meeting on 5 March 2026, where community members were able to raise issues with the Manager Transport Planning from the City of Sydney. The submission covers not just the exhibited proposal but issues raised that are part of the wider context and implications of the proposed change. The submission primarily deals with Waterloo impacts of concern to the public housing community.

Below is some information on the proposed Eveleigh Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge discovered from a Government Information Public Access (GIPA) request for bridge studies since 2020 made by REDWatch on behalf of the Eveleigh Bridge Alliance (EBA). Below is both a brief overview of the what the documents revealed as well as links to key documents and the whole GIPA release.
File Redfern North Eveleigh Bridge Feasibility Study ARUP 2023 (GIPA) by REDWatch, last updated: Mar 01, 2026 05:32 PM
This document brings ARUP documents found in two of the GIPA released records. The first document “Redfern North Eveleigh Crossing” is labelled Record 3, it is undated but according to the GIPA release letter it is dated 26 July 2023. Interestingly this is the only document that shows “Facilitate an Innovation and Collaboration precinct” among the objectives. The second GIPA record is Record 5 “Redfern North Eveleigh Bridge: Feasibility Study” is undated and includes the 7 July 2023 SCT Consulting report as well as two ARUP November 2022 studies a “Constraints Review” and a “Feasibility Study and concept Options Report”. A draft ARUP study report that duplicates material in the above documents is also in the GIPA release but not in this collection to minimise duplication. These ARUP studies explore in detail options and assess the engineering feasibility of the providing the connection and there is duplication of information between reports. ARUP conclude that “constructing the bridge will be difficult, expensive and take several years” to build across the active railway corridor. ARUP uses the SCT Consulting Report to argue it “does not provide outstanding time savings or convenience for users”.

This extract from the June 2025 Transport for NSW North to South Eveleigh Optioneering Review v3 extracts the preferred option (Option 4) from the options review. It also includes information on how the bridge could be constructed and launched by a process previously agreed with trains NSW. Option 4 links Wilson Street Darlington between Carriageworks and The Paint Shop by a ramp to the bridge across the railway corridor to a lift and escalators to Locomotive Street between the Locomotive Workshop and the Large Erecting Shop.
