Major Project Application - MP 08_0015

A Major Project Application was lodged by the RWA in January 2008 with the Department of Planning for the Redevelopment for residential, commercial, retail and cultural uses of North Eveleigh. On March 13 2008 the Minister for Planning declared the proposal to be a major project under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and authorised a Concept Plan to be submitted. The Director-General’s Requirements were issued on 17th March 2008 and project was added to the public register on 7th April 2008. On May 1 2008 the Concept Plan went on Public Exhibition until June 12 2008. On 7th October 2008 the Department of Planning posted the RWA's response to the exhibition comments and the resulting proposed modifications in their Preferred project report. The Preferred Project report will now be assessed by the Department who will make a determination on the project. The details of the DoP listing and link to documents on 7th October is below:

RWA’s North Eveleigh Site Heritage Interpretation Strategy

The RWA’s North Eveleigh Concept Plan Preferred Project Report of September 2008 includes a Heritage Interpretation which the Executive Summary describes in the following terms: “In addition to the existing requirements for heritage protection, the Statement of Commitments has been amended to require proponents to develop Interpretation Strategies in accordance with the Interpretation Strategy Guidelines specifically developed for the site. This will ensure an integrated heritage interpretation which best reflects the site’s history.” The full text of the Heritage Interpretation Strategy is provided below.

PEEPSHOW: Chippendale... behind closed doors will commence at 1pm with the official opening of Sydney's new multidisciplinary arts space - FraserStudios, before five different tours set off to explore the suburb of Chippendale on the hour... every hour til 6pm. On these tours, audiences will be taken to locations across Chippendale where they will be encouraged to experience the creative industries and people that make this eclectic suburb truly unique. The South Sydney Herald is a local Independent paper and has its own website at www.southsydneyherald.com.au. REDWatch includes articles related to the Redfern Waterloo area in our media coverage and a full copy of the paper can be downloaded in PDF form from the SSH website. Heritage Overview of the Former Eveleigh Railway Yards – September 2008

It now appears that the future of the historic workshops has been secured. But the blacksmith's threatened eviction has become a rallying point for those who want to save more of the valuable railway heritage at Redfern. Golden Grove St access case - Stapleton Transport
