PUBLIC MEETING ON CUB CONCEPT PLAN - 11 November 2006

Fosters' Concept Plan for the Carlton and United Breweries (CUB) site on Broadway will be the focus of a meeting organised by the City on Saturday 11 November. The Concept Plan is the official document submitted to the Minister for Planning that will be used to determine planning approval for the site's redevelopment.

This may be the only public discussion on the Concept Plan, as the Department of Planning has not confirmed it will hold a community meeting. The City is inviting Fosters and the Minister for Planning to participate in the meeting.

The meeting will give you information on Foster's Concept Plan, outline the process for its assessment; let you know the City's preliminary opinion, provide you with an opportunity to discuss what it means for Chippendale, and help you prepare a submission. The closing date for submissions is Monday 27 November 2006.

The Minister for Planning took control of the CUB site in June this year under state laws introduced in 2005, and recommenced planning under his new process. This occurred just as the City was preparing to exhibit draft planning controls, endorsed for public exhibition by the City and Central Sydney Panning Committee (CSPC), following extensive research and consultation.

Fosters' Plan confirms my fears that the Minister's intervention could lead to unsustainable development. Compared with the City's draft controls, the Concept Plan includes:
* greater building density, increased by between five and 20 per cent;
* heights of the tallest buildings increased by 10 per cent;
* Other buildings, closer to existing Chippendale residents, much higher.
* Loss of significant heritage buildings for a new road; and
* reduced sunlight to the proposed public park.
