Go-ahead for $3.2bn city overhauls

PLANS for a major redevelopment of two key Sydney CBD sites have been approved, the State Government announced yesterday reports Hannah Edwards in the Sun Herald 11th February 2007.

Under the sweeping plans, East Darling Harbour will be transformed, with the creation of an 11-hectare park comparable to Hyde Park, the opening up of 1.4 kilometres of foreshore to the public and the creation of 233,000 square metres of office space.

The $2.5 billion revamp of the 22-hectare former container terminal is expected to take 12 years, starting next year, and create 15,000 permanent jobs.

Planning Minister Frank Sartor said the $800 million redevelopment of the old Carlton and United Breweries site at Chippendale had also been confirmed.

This plan will create homes for 2800 people, a 6500 square metre public area, and office space for 4800 workers.

Twenty-nine of the site's historic buildings will be preserved.

Mr Sartor said the projects will create "two new gateways to the city".
