The Cockatoo Run Incorporating the “Illawarra Tree Top Flyer”

The Cockatoo Run heritage train and Illawarra Tree Top Flyer offers the opportunity to experience the scenic delights of the South Coast and Southern Highlands and visit the Illawarra fly in one relaxing package.

Your train whistles out of Sydney at 9.00am taking you across the expanse of the Georges River and through the Royal National Park (the first declared National Park in the world). Emerging from the Otford Tunnel your train crosses the impressive Stanwell Park Viaduct and skirts the sea cliffs and beaches to Wollongong.

After leaving Wollongong, the train starts its steep ascent of the Illawarra Escarpment through coastal rainforest to Summit Tank - a climb of 600 metres in only 16 kilometres. At Summit Tank there is a pause where you will be rewarded with panoramic views over Lake Illawarra and the South Coast to Kiama. Upon arrival at Robertson, passengers can transfer to coaches for the short drive to the Illawarra Fly.  Experience the Illawarra fly Treetop Walk, the only steel canopy walk in NSW.  Situated on the Illawarra Escarpment the Illawarra Fly is 500 metres long and 25 metres high, featuring two cantilevered arms that take you to the edge!  Coaches will return you to Robertson, where you can take some time to experience the “Green Heart of the Southern Highlands”, board your train and retrace the path back to Sydney arriving at 6.15pm.

The Illawarra Tree Top Flyer is hauled by heritage diesel locomotives and consists of fully restored 1930's carriages. A buffet car is included offering light refreshments and souvenirs throughout the journey.

Passengers can join the train at Sydney Terminal, Hurstville, Sutherland, Thirroul and Wollongong stations. Discount fares are available for group bookings.
