Excessive noise from ATP

Not for the first time, a function was held at the ATP on Tuesday March 18 which exceeded legal noise levels, causing stress to residents Writes Janice Murphy in a letter to the South Sydney Herald of April 2008.

There have been many illegal dance parties held in the surrounding areas over the years, and irresponsible operators brought to account. Now the State Government has taken over management of the ATP and is behaving like an overbearing dictator (as seen by points below) and refusing to abide by the legal noise limits that everyone else in the area is expected to adhere to. Advice has been received that:

1. the ATP offered one resident double glazing on his windows and free tickets to the upcoming MTV awards. This can be taken as ATP confirmation that noise cannot be controlled within the premises without further acoustic correction on the building;

2. the on site acoustic technician in attendance on the night of the March 18 function was requested by a resident to take noise measurements from the resident’s premises. The acoustic technician declined to do this;

3. the acoustic technician advised this resident that it was extremely hard to measure noise for many reasons and he advised that noise measurements taken from functions at the ATP have exceeded legal noise limits.

In view of the above I have requested that the Premier direct the ATP to immediately cancel any proposed events at the Redfern site that may exceed the legal noise limits expected from everyone else in the area until the building is acoustically treated and residents can be assured noise limits will not be exceeded at any time during an event.
