Factory Balnaves Foundation Open House Program Continues

The Factory has announced the renewal of our partnership with the Sydney Opera House and the excellent and exciting Balnaves Foundation Open House Program. The Balnaves Foundation Open House Program is about making Sydney Opera house accessible to all and to broaden community access reports this media release from the Factory Community Centre.

Through the Balnaves Foundation, the Open House Program offers subsidised tickets to performances for unwaged, pensioners, health care and transport concession card holders. The Factory community centre in Waterloo has recruited an outreach worker who will promote the show to various community groups and residents to help ensure as many as possible have a safe, un-intimidating and enjoyable experience at the Opera House through this excellent initiative.

Since the launch of the programme over 2,500 people from ‘economically challenged’ backgrounds have been given the chance to experience a live performance for only $5.

The latest show to be part of this programme will be the truly magical performance - Edward Scissorhands on June 3 at 6:30pm.  This touching and witty gothic fairy-tale transforms the 1990 cult movie into a humorous dance drama – with no words to clutter the theatrical terrain. Instead, expressive dance, pantomime, a sumptuous musical score performed live, witty and spectacular staging and dramatic lighting tell this heart-warming story.  This hit show will appeal to all cultures and backgrounds making it one of the most accessible shows ever.

Edward Scissorhands is a funny, poignant and magical way to spend the evening Founder and Director of the Foundation, Neil Balnaves said, “I am delighted to be bringing a renowned work of international quality and undeniable entertainment value to an audience who otherwise would never have been able to see the show.

This goes beyond allowing disadvantaged communities to experience a performance at Sydney Opera House, as Edward Scissorhands is a show that deals with people who are treated by society as outsiders or who are marginalised. It is a perfect match." Edward Scissorhands is a funny, poignant and magical way to spend the evening.

Michael Shreenan local community worker said “We believe that the arts are an integral part of a healthy community, which can be motivating, and provide a wide range of social benefits, and significant value to our communities. We are delighted to be able to continue our partnership with the Opera House to enable barrier free access to excellent performances for the whole community. Balnaves Foundation should be applauded for their efforts in recognising the need and setting up this program".
