Green Square town centre has priority : Court

A LAND and Environment Court decision handed down last month will ensure Green Square is not threatened by rival commercial development reports Robert Burton Bradley in Central of 8 April 2009.

Sydney Council successfully argued that a proposed “big box” retail development near Green Square significantly risked the successful implementation of the Green Square Town Centre Plan.

On March 20, the court upheld the city’s refusal of a major retail development opposite the planned Green Square town centre, on the “Gazcorp” site on Botany Road, Alexandria.

The proposal included a supermarket, discount department store and specialty shops.

Cr Moore said the ruling not only protected the future of Green Square, but recognised the years of planning that had already gone into the project.

“The court found that the city’s Green Square town centre vision has been well-established in planning documents and represents the culmination of many studies, long-term consultation with other agencies and community involvement,” she said.

Commissioner Graham Brown agreed with the council officers that the town centre’s early development was an important goal and developments that threatened this goal should not be contemplated.
The short-term provision of retail facilities should not be prioritised over the long-term objectives of the town centre he found.
