dumped trolleys anger locals

Scores of shopping trolleys from a Coles supermarket in Surry Hills are being stolen and dumped in Redfern, according to residents reports Robert Burton-Bradley in Central on 4 June 2009.

Philip Daley said there were trolleys left several levels up in his apartment block.

He said others were being dumped all over the streets surrounding the supermarket on the corner of Baptist and Cleveland streets.

“It’s visual pollution and they block street paths and stairwells in apartments. It’s dangerous,” Mr Daley said. “Shopping trolleys cost a lot to make. Coles must lose a lot of shopping trolleys, so why are they allowing them to leave the store? I don’t understand.”

Mr Daley called on Coles to ban trolleys from being taken beyond the supermarket car park. “Of course there are elderly people who can’t carry shopping far, I understand there’s two sides to the argument. But there must be a better solution.’’

A spokesman for Coles said the responsibility for the return of trolleys was the customer’s, not the supermarket’s.

“We employ trolley contractors to find and return the trolleys. But beyond that, it’s the responsibility of the customer not to take the trolleys away,” he said.

The spokesman ruled out preventing trolleys from being taken beyond the car park or a coin return system.

“We don’t think that’s a solution. It affects elderly people or mothers with children who need to take a trolley out to a car park,” he said.
