Nine charged in Redfern drug raid

Eight people will face court in Sydney today, charged over a drug bust at The Block in Redfern reports ABC News on 10 December 2009.

Police raided homes in Louis Street yesterday, allegedly finding heroin, cannabis and cocaine as well as other drug paraphernalia.

They charged five men, aged between 32 and 38, and three women, aged between 21 and 33, with drug supply.

The were all refused bail to face Central Local Court Today.

A ninth person - a 56-year-old man - was also charged with being found on a drug premises.

He was given bail to appear in court next month.

Acting Inspector Kel O'Reilly says says it is part of ongoing police efforts to clean up the area.

"I think police are getting on top of it. Our commander here works very very hard driving the police." he said.

"We support him 100 per cent. I think if you look at the facts and figures the Block, and Redfern and Waterloo, the situation's improved greatly over the last probably 12 or 18 months."
