All Options to be Explored for M5 Link Road

The NSW Minister for Transport and Roads David Campbell confirmed that residents will have more time to have their say on the M5 expansion, with community consultation extended to 12 March 2010 reports this media release of 1 February 2010.

“The expansion proposal is important for the future transport needs of Sydney and community feedback is essential,” Mr Campbell said.

“The NSW Government proposes to expand the 32km M5 corridor at some point in the future. This proposal involves about a quarter of the Sydney Orbital network, currently used by around 95,000 vehicles per day.”

“Importantly, the proposal includes a five kilometre link road from the eastern M5 tunnel exit point to the airport and industrial areas close to the airport.

“Improving the road network in this area is essential to provide improved access to the airport and industrial areas close to the airport and will reduce congestion and travel times for travellers from the south west into the future.

“While the need for this link road is important, I want to assure residents that no decision has been made on a new link road. The road location shown in the feasibility study is only one suggestion. It is not approved, it has no status.

“I have asked the RTA to look at all options in partnership with the community and any road development in the area will be worked out with the community and stakeholders.”

Mr Campbell said that several meetings have already been held with the community and these will continue for at least 18 months during the environmental assessment stage.

“The RTA will continue to meet with residents, the airport and other stakeholders to examine the issues and possible options. The RTA in partnership with the community will assess all options before making a final decision.”
