Clover Moore Supports Sydney Uni Public Forum for 28 April

Clover More in her enews No 492 of Friday 16 April 2010 has welcomed Sydney University's initiative in exploring opportunities for working with the community for mutual benefit over the North Eveleigh site. She will attend the forum being run by the University at CarriageWorks on 28 April. The text from the enews is below:

PUBLIC FORUM ON NORTH EVELEIGH

Sydney University will begin a discussion with the community about proposals for the renewal of North Eveleigh, at a public forum at Carriageworks on Wednesday 28 April.

Students and the education sector play a vital role in Sydney's economy. The possible redevelopment of North Eveleigh could assist us to meet key Sustainable Sydney 2030 targets including:

  • a sustainable development with significantly reduced greenhouse gas footprint and low water use;
  • support for cycling and walking in the local area-with cycle paths, end of trip facilities like bike parking and showers, and footpath seating with good street trees for shade;
  • a low rate of car ownership and car use, including low levels of private parking especially considering North Eveleigh's proximity to the railway;
  • a diverse precinct of housing, commercial, cultural and community uses, employment, visitors and activity-so that the development itself and the local streets and surrounding area are well activated, stimulating the local economy, local shops and improving safety and security day and night;
  • an inclusion of affordable housing-so that key workers and students are part of the growing community; and
  • a permeable and open urban design with a fine grain and a human scale with good integration to the station and surrounding areas-a place where the community feels welcome, part of the local streets not apart from the local streets.

I believe any redevelopment proposal for North Eveleigh must incorporate these key principles. I encourage you to attend Sydney University's meeting and provide feedback.
