Can the people problems be fixed by estate redevelopment?

Estate renewal and housing mix is portrayed by government as a fix-all for public housing estates. Geoff Turnbull in Inner Sydney Voice magazine asks can new buildings alone really address the problems created when government place people with higher and higher needs into public housing without the wrap around human services necessary for them to keep their tenancies and address their issues.
Waterloo Human Services Plan

As part of the Waterloo SSP redevelopment REDWatch and local agencies pushed for a Human Services Plan to go alongside the built environment master plan. in 2017 FACS LAHC agreed such a plan would be undertaken. Here we have pulled together activities that relate to human service planning in Waterloo.
Human Services Plans

With the RWA taking over the role of the Premiers Department Redfern Waterloo Partnership Project (RWPP) the RWA became also responsible for the reform of Human Services within Redfern Waterloo which had been recommended by the Morgan Disney Report. The RWA produced two Human Services Plans and an initial evaluation of HSP1. The SMDA have taken over some responsibility for the Human Services Plans but it is unclear as to how this area of the RWA's responsibility will be progressed. Improved Human Service delivery was one of the aims of the NSW Government intervention which was not achieved by the RWA.

Elizabeth Street Redfern was declared a State Significant Precinct on Sept 9 2017. The area declared is the vacant block next to the PCYC and the PCYC itself. Here you can finds oout about this development as it unfolds.

Waterloo Public Housing Renewal - Exisiting Property sizes

Land and Housing has supplied REDWatch with a breakdown of the existing housing stock in the area covered by the proposed master plan. The figures show how many of different size units currently exist on the various blocs and buildings. This information is of interest because there is concern that one possible outcome will be the rentention of the same number of front doors but that the unit size will shrink.

Stealing Our Skies report that as a result of public and council comment the UK based applicant, Scape (http://www.scape.com/) has made small amendments to its initial proposal. The scale, density and amenity of the development, however, may still concern current local residents. You can see their concerns here but must make a submission by 28 July if you have concerns.
