Seeking nominations for local business awards

This year’s City of Sydney Local Business Awards are shaping up to be another hot contest with the voting commencing 29 May reports Ben Falkenmire in the July 2007 South Sydney Herald.

The awards are open to local businesses in and around the CBD and the inner south, east and west areas of the city which can be classified in one of 29 categories ranging from cafes, restaurants and bars or pubs, to environmental stores, grocery shops, hairdressers and fashion.

Voting closes on 24 July with category finalists announced on 10 August and published in the August edition of the SSH (newspaper sponsors of this year’s event). Mystery judges will visit each of the finalists with both public and contestants invited to the Gala Presentation evening on 12 September where the winners will be announced.

Appetite Café on Regent Street in Redfern which reached the final round for ‘Outstanding Café’ in the last two years of competition, is again entering and has its sights set on the top position.

“It’s tough work going up against the big guns in the city who can be serving 200 people plus at any one time, but we’ll give it another shot,” said Appetite owner Leanne Fraser who speaks highly of the awards’ ripple effect in the community. “People really took an interest in our finalist placing and it was a great boost in morale for the staff,” said Leanne who created a mini Business Awards shrine in her intimate and pacifying café environment.

Café E l l a and Tripod Café on Abercrombie Street, Survival Expresso Bar and Video Ezy on Redfern Street, are also considering entering the awards based on discussions with the SSH.

It is not too late for businesses to be nominated. Those interested in nominating or voting for a business should fill out the coupon available in this edition of the SSH or head to the online website www.thebusinessawards.com.au
