Hills Heightened

A MAJOR revitalisation of Surry Hills is flagged in Sydney Council's visionary 2030 plan. Improved transport connections to surrounding suburbs, retail revitalisation and a major redevelopment of Central station are among the plan's proposals reports Central of 2 April 2008.

A new road transport corridor connecting Woolloomooloo to Botany Bay is planned and will travel through Bourke and Crown streets.

This will alleviate congestion along Crown Street and improve access to the growing town centre further south at Green Square.

There are dramatic plans to redevelop Central station, either by building above the existing structure or placing it underground.

It is hoped this will open up Surry Hills to the neighbouring suburb of Chippendale, two communities currently divided by the rail line.

A new civic hub centring on Crown Street's Shannon Reserve would be developed. Already a community focal point, the area will include a revamped community centre, library and possible fresh food markets.

A much-needed makeover of the Surry Hills shopping centre on the corner of Cleveland and Baptist streets will further improve retail options for the area.

Increased support of an already healthy creative industry in the area south of Goulburn Street has been suggested, although there is no detail as to what this might include.
