Redfern drug raid

In January this year, police from the Redfern Local Area Command established “Strike Force Salkeld”, to investigate the local sale of illicit drugs such as Heroin, Cannabis, Speed, Ice and Cocaine.

Over several months, a number of alleged suspects were identified during a series of undercover purchases.

The strike force, assisted by members of the Dog Squad, Police Rescue Squad and Central Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad based at Redfern, executed search warrants at two neighbouring homes in Louis Street.

A drug detection dog was deployed during the operation to search the properties and conduct a sweep through nearby streets.

As a result of the investigation, eight females and 10 males, aged between 17 and 45, were charged with 26 supply offences, primarily relating to the alleged sale of heroin.

Other charges include custody of a knife in a public place and enter inclosed lands.

Those arrested were taken to the Redfern and Newtown Police Stations.

The majority were refused bail and ordered to appear in the Central Local Court today and tomorrow.

Senior Redfern police have vowed to continue to target drug activity and drug-related crime in the area known as ‘The Block.’

“In recent years, we have made significant progress towards ridding this neighbourhood of drugs and the suppliers remain on notice, we won’t let up now,” said Redfern Crime Manager, Brad Monk.

The strike force investigations are continuing.
