City welcomes Pemulwuy project

The Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore MP welcomed the State Government's commitment to the Pemulwuy Project reports this media release from the city of Sydney on 2 july 2009.

"Minister Keneally's approval of the Concept Plan for the Pemulwuy Project is symbolically important for Redfern's Aboriginal community and will enable practical progress in providing housing for Aboriginal families," Ms Moore said.

"The Pemulwuy Project responds to the long-standing need for culturally appropriate and accessible Aboriginal housing. The project will strengthen the sense of community in the area by respecting and reflecting Aboriginal culture and spirituality.

"Improved facilities for Aboriginal cultural development, employment and education will benefit the whole area."

Ms Moore said continued consultation, sensitive planning and design excellence are crucial to the success of the project, as the Concept Plan is translated into a final design and development.

"The City welcomes the State Government's response to our previous concerns about adequate residential parking, open space and design excellence. I welcome the Minister's commitment to continue working closely with us on the Pemulwuy Project.

"The City of Sydney will work with the Government and the Aboriginal Housing Company to achieve a quality, sustainable development," Ms Moore said.
