Glebe’s great but Redfern needs attention: Sydney Councillor

Glebe might be the model city village on its 150th birthday, but on the other side of Parramatta Rd, Redfern is languishing under an undeserved reputation and municipal neglect, City of Sydney councillor Irene Doutney has said reports Kim Shaw in the Central of 5 August 2009.

Redfern has not enjoyed the upgrades of its neighbours and will soon experience a massive residential influx with several new developments on the cards.

In the meantime, before the face of Redfern is changed forever by two new 18-storey high-rise towers, a concerted effort is needed to bring Redfern back to life, Cr Doutney said. “We are trying to get some interesting tenancies in there,’’ she said of the shopfronts on the main street, Redfern St.

“We need to get those shutters removed or have public art on them. There are premises coming up for rent and we need to get really interesting and good clients there. We need to encourage shops back to Redfern. The reputation it has is not really there any more.”

Cr Doutney said the gentrification would continue with the North Eveleigh residential project.

“It is likely that there will be tension between the thousands of low-income people that live here now,” she said. “Gentrification will change very much the form of what Redfern is today. “It is overdevelopment, but I understand the pressure of the metropolitan strategy to develop those areas. But Redfern will be a different city.”
