Chippendale battles for Survival

In relation to the development planning for the Carlton and United Brewery site, the South Sydney Herald’s Samantha Van reports that Lord Mayor Clover Moore told a public meeting in Chippendale, “I can’t stress enough how tragic it is”. She lamented the concept plan for which Frank Sartor, the NSW Planning Minister, and the Carlton & United Brewery are seeking approval. The plan includes 1,060 apartments and 436 car parking spaces for tenants, with an additional 250 short-stay car park. Moore also said that the seizure of greater planning powers by Sartor “was heartbreaking. We tried so hard to get a proposal to beneft the community.” She said that the City of Sydney spent $800,000 in public money to get the best possible outcome for the site, which she hoped would be partly used for education. A motion for an enquiry to be held, to examine the processes, and for the halt of any further decisions regarding the site until after the state elections, was passed unanimously.
