Police officer named NSW Woman of the Year

A senior policewoman has been named the New South Wales Woman of the Year reports the ABC on 9th March 2007.

Assistant Police Commissioner Catherine Burn leads the Professional Standards Command.

She was recognised for her work with the Aboriginal community when she was the commander at Redfern Police Station.

"I was in there for approximately for 15-16 months which is quite enough time to get out into the community and to engage the community, and to start to achieve some results, and I think that also what we did was sustainable so I'm encouraged by that," she said.

The Aboriginal Housing Company manager, Mick Mundine, nominated Ms Burn for the award.

"Even all Aboriginal people in the Redfern, Waterloo area they really respect her because she came in at the grassroot level and really mingled with the people," he said.

"She's got a lot of respect and I think a big congratulations go to her."
