Redfern Revamp Stresses Culture, Business

AN indigenous cultural centre attracting international visitors is just one of the ideas put forward for Redfern in the Sydney Council 2030 plan for the city's future reports Central of 2 April 2008.

The idea has already won support from the local indigenous community with leaders like Mickey Mundine pledging their support, as revealed in Central last month.

The 2030 plan also calls for a strategy supporting indigenous businesses, training and cultural facilities.

Most of the plan focuses on the already partially upgraded Redfern Street precinct and aims to further drive its rebirth though improved street stapes, roadworks and public spaces.

This would tie in with the recently restored Mum Shirl Memorial and the upgrade of Redfern Oval now underway.

Mickey Mundine wants to see an indigenous cultural centre in Redfern.

Some of the indigenous business and cultural opportunities to be considered will make use of facilities currently under development at the nearby CarriageWorks site in North Eveleigh.
