Uni Growth Fears

A DRAFT plan for the $2 billion future development at the University of Sydney is making its neighbours nervous reports Robert Burton-Bradley in the Central of 18 June 2008.

The blueprint Campus 2020 document outlines a major rebuilding of the university's existing Darlington campus and potential acquisition of nearby sites for expansion.

One area mentioned, the disused North Eveleigh rail yard site, has just had a concept plan for future redevelopment released by the Redfern-Waterloo Authority.

Community group RedWatch said it was concerned there would be serious traffic impacts on the suburb of Darlington.

"There is major concern about the university's plan to close Butlin St, which would create major traffic problems as this is a major access road for traffic to Darlington from City Road," RedWatch spokesman Geoff Turnbull said.

The plan proposes dividing the university along faculty lines into different precincts.

It also lists Harold Park in Glebe as a possible site for purchase and expansion. A spokesman for Sydney University said the plan was a draft and it was too early to comment about its contents.
