Residents: upgrade wont solve issues

The Department of Housing has announced plans to improve landscaping around the Waterloo Green public housing estate, but residents are concerned it will have no impact on the areas social problems reports Jennifer Bennett in Central of 27th August 2008.

Resident Precinct group member Ross Smith said the green was used primarily by young people as a spot for drinking.

Its the irresponsible consumption of alcohol on the green and the flow-out effects on the community, Mr Smith said. Ive never yet seen a park attack someone. Why isn’t money being spent on the social issues?

The landscaping includes improved play equipment, a multi-function ball court, new pathways, plants and seating areas.

Factory Community Centre representative Michael Mackenzie Shreenan said the landscaping changes would have a positive effect.

A Department of Housing spokesperson said residents had an avenue if they were concerned about trouble. Housing NSW encourages tenants and residents to continue to report any instances of antisocial behaviour in their area to police.
