Greens get two seats

The Greens have picked up a second seat on Sydney Council. Mardi Gras ‘78er Irene Doutney will join Chris Harris on the council following a flow of preferences reports Sydney Star observer on 20 September 2008.

An excited Doutney told supporters she would now start work on developing policies and ideas to improve the council’s relationship with the community.

“Hopefully, now that we have two Greens on council, we will at least be able to get our motions onto the table,” Doutney said.

“I am committed to working to get decent outcomes for public and affordable housing; getting more LGBTI issues on the agenda — especially homophobia in Oxford St — helping the Aboriginal community, looking at human services for seniors, young people and the disadvantaged, and watching overdevelopment —especially in Redfern and Waterloo — under the RWA.”

Doutney said she was developing a website for people to communicate to her through, as well as using her existing Facebook page.

The impact on the second Greens seat, however, is yet to be seen following the announcement that Clover Moore’s Independent team now has a clear majority on the council.
